# Perplexity launches AI-powered browser Comet, available via waitlist

The AI search company's new Chromium-based browser ships with a Coinbase partnership for real-time crypto data baked in from day one.

Perplexity AI rolled out its Comet browser on July 9, 2025, giving its highest-tier subscribers a first look at what the company hopes will become a serious challenger to Google Chrome. The invite-only launch is restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers, who pay $200 per month for the privilege of being early.

Just one day later, on July 10, Perplexity announced a partnership with Coinbase to pipe real-time crypto market data directly into the browser.

## What Comet actually does

Comet is built on the Chromium framework, the same open-source foundation that powers Chrome, Brave, Edge, and most of the browsers you’ve actually used. The difference is what sits on top: Perplexity’s conversational AI is embedded as the default search engine, turning the browser into something closer to an interactive research assistant than a traditional window to the web.

In practical terms, that means users can summarize web pages, navigate websites through natural language commands, and manage tasks like email directly within the browsing experience.

The Coinbase integration adds a crypto-specific layer. Real-time prices, trading volumes, and market trend data are accessible without toggling between tabs or opening separate applications.

Perplexity plans to open Comet to the broader public on October 2, 2025, removing the paywall and making the browser freely available worldwide. Mobile versions are also in the pipeline, with an Android release slated for November 2025 and iOS following in March 2026.

## Why the Coinbase partnership matters for crypto

The Coinbase integration positions Comet as a potential all-in-one tool for crypto market participants. Instead of maintaining a patchwork of bookmarks, extensions, and standalone apps, traders could consolidate their research workflow into a single interface.

For Coinbase, the partnership extends its data distribution footprint beyond its own app and website. Every Comet user who checks a token price through the browser is engaging with Coinbase’s data infrastructure, even if they never open the Coinbase app itself.

## The competitive landscape and legal headwinds

Perplexity is not operating in a vacuum. OpenAI is reportedly developing its own browser technology. Perplexity does have notable backers, with Nvidia among the company’s investors.

Legal challenges add another layer of complexity. Amazon secured a court order in March 2026 that restricts Comet’s agentic shopping capabilities, essentially limiting the browser’s ability to autonomously execute purchase-related tasks on Amazon’s platform. CNN has also initiated copyright disputes over how Comet handles content usage.

The $200 monthly price tag for early access also raises questions about Comet’s eventual business model. Once the browser goes free in October, Perplexity will need to monetize through other channels, whether that’s advertising, premium tiers, or partnerships like the Coinbase deal.
