Patreon cut 20% of its staff. Its CEO insists AI isn’t replacing them. Patreon cut 93 employees, about 20% of its workforce, on Thursday, but CEO Jack Conte insisted the layoffs are not because AI is replacing humans. Conte said the company needs a leaner cost base to navigate a market that has 'undergone profound change over the last 6 months,' while acknowledging that AI has 'fundamentally transformed the tech industry' and reshaped how Patreon operates. The cuts come despite the platform's growth, with podcasters alone generating $629 million in 2025, up 33% year-over-year. Patreon is cutting a fifth of its staff. Its founder wants you to know it is not because of AI. On Thursday the creator-payments company laid off 93 people, about 20% of its workforce, as 404 Media first reported https://www.404media.co/patreon-lays-off-20-percent-of-its-workforce/ . Chief executive Jack Conte called the day “painful” and took the blame himself. “The people at Patreon are the core of our spirit,” he wrote. “As the person responsible for this decision, I don’t take that lightly.” His explanation was not a business in trouble. Conte said the core was “healthy and strong”. More than 300,000 creators earn on the platform. It pays out billions a year, with steady monthly growth. The problem, he said, was a market that had “undergone profound change over the last 6 months”. Patreon needed a leaner cost base to stay “a stable, dependable rock for our creators”. Not because of AI Then came the careful part. “We are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans,” Conte wrote. The tools, he added, are “not substitutes for the creativity, judgment, or craftsmanship that our teammates have in spades”. And yet a caveat follows. “AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry,” Conte wrote. It changes “how we work, how we build products, how we communicate”, and thus “how we operate and organize”. So AI is not taking these jobs. It is reshaping the company that cut them. Conte has been blunter about the stakes elsewhere. On the Decoder podcast https://www.theverge.com/podcast/952607/patreon-ceo-jack-conte , he said Patreon must embrace these tools or “be dead in three years”. A growing business, shrinking headcount What makes the cuts jar is the numbers around them. In April, Patreon said https://variety.com/2026/biz/news/patreon-cuts-20-percent-of-employees-painful-restructuring-1236819665/ its podcasters alone generated $629 million in 2025, up 33% on the year. Its hosts include Quentin Tarantino, Bret Easton Ellis and Nikki Glaser. “And it had to cut staff?? Insane,” one observer wrote. Conte’s answer is that the shift into a “media and community network” will take time, and the wait needs funding. Departing staff get at least 16 weeks of pay, plus an extra week for every year served. They also keep healthcare to the end of the year, and get a $1,500 laptop stipend. It is Patreon’s biggest cut since 2022, when it shed about 80 people and closed its Dublin and Berlin offices. “This change allows us to continue building from a position of strength,” Conte wrote, “no matter how the chaotic world around us changes.” Protecting creators from the thing it is restructuring around The move sits awkwardly beside Patreon’s public stance on AI. A week earlier, it started blocking AI crawlers https://thenextweb.com/news/cloudflare-block-ai-crawlers-pay-publishers from scraping creators’ work to train models. Conte announced the Cloudflare partnership in all-caps. In March, he warned AI firms against deploying tools in a way that “just creates a bloodbath for the world’s creative people”. Internally, though, the company is embracing the same technology to move faster with fewer people. It fights AI for its creators https://thenextweb.com/news/substack-pangram-ai-detection-claudefishing , and leans on it for itself. Patreon is not alone, and that is the point. Uber https://thenextweb.com/news/uber-customer-service-layoffs-10-percent-ai cut 10% of its customer-service staff the same day, also citing AI. Monday.com https://thenextweb.com/news/monday-com-layoffs-20-percent-ai-growth-strategy , Snap, Block, LinkedIn and Meta have all trimmed headcount this year against an AI backdrop. Almost none say the machines did it. They say what Conte says. AI has changed how the work gets done, and the company must change with it. Is that a real distinction, or a softer way to say the same thing? It is the question hanging over the industry https://thenextweb.com/news/computer-science-enrollment-falls-ai-first-time .
