# Palo Alto Networks forms own Project Glasswing: AI to fight AI-driven security threats

Palo Alto Networks followed in the footsteps of Nvidia and Anthropic by assembling an all-star group focused on AI-powered cybersecurity.

The Frontier AI Critical Defense Program builds on Palo Alto Network’s existing collaborations with IBM, Red Hat, Microsoft, Siemens, and Idaho National Laboratory, welcoming Anthropic, OpenAI, and Mitsubishi into the fold.

The initiative is targeted at shielding critical infrastructure across operational technology (OT), health care, commercial software, and open-source from AI-driven exploits. Members coordinate with Palo Alto Networks in applying network-level “virtual patches” to neutralize security flaws prior to exploitation.

The security giant claimed its work with compute-heavy frontier AI models has already uncovered more than 14,000 previously unknown vulnerabilities in open source software. As a comparison, [Anthropic claimed at one point](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/chinese-mythos-adds-further-fuel-to-sovereignty-debate-in-ai-security/) to have used its vaunted Claude Mythos Preview Model to fing more than 23,000 flaws across more than 1,000 open-source projects.

IBM and Red Hat's similar [Project Lightwell](https://www.sdxcentral.com/news/ibm-red-hat-commit-5b-to-open-source-security-initiative/) venture has not yet disclosed any findings, but it's worth remembering that project is still in its infancy.

The various ventures are connected together by AI's threat to the landscape, with Palo Alto Networks underscoring how its ability to automate attacks and dramatically reduce attack timelines. The Frontier AI Critical Defense Program aims to help critical infrastructure "patch at ID speed," reducing the exposure gap that leaves essential systems open to bad actors long before fixes can be properly deployed.

In essence, cybersecurity moves from a human-centric domain to a more compute-intensive operation, with AI agents seeking out existing vulnerabilities before they're found by bad actors armed with malicious AI tools.

"In the age of frontier AI, the traditional, reactive race to build and deploy software patches before adversaries exploit a flaw is a losing battle," Palo Alto Networks Chief Product Officer Lee Klarich explained. "Protecting critical infrastructure requires a structural shift from isolated patching to collective, proactive intelligence. Through initiatives like our Frontier AI Critical Defense Program, we can neutralize threats at the network layer before they are weaponized."
