Palmer Luckey: US universities are falling behind China’s, and it shows

Anduril founder Palmer Luckey warned that US universities are falling behind China's by failing to teach engineers how to build, handing China a lead in technical talent. He argued that American schools produce designers rather than makers, while China trains world-class battery, metallurgical, and optical engineers. The warning comes as AI and advanced manufacturing become central to great-power competition.

Palmer Luckey has a blunt warning about the US-China tech race: America is losing the classroom. The Anduril founder argues that US universities have stopped teaching engineers how to build. That, he says, hands China a lead well beyond cheap labour. He made the comments in a conversation with the Hoover Institution, highlighted by Fortune.

“American companies have been hollowed out because our companies feed these colleges a whole bill of goods on what they should be teaching people,” Luckey said. “Basically, we’re not teaching engineers how to be engineers anymore.”

‘Architecture astronauts’ #

His charge is that US schools now turn out designers, not makers. China holds many of the world’s best battery engineers, metallurgists and optical engineers, he said. America, by contrast, trains what he calls “architecture astronauts.”

“We’re teaching them how to be high-level design shops that put together design packages that get sent to the real engineers in China,” he said. He even took aim at Apple, which designs its products in California and leans on manufacturing partners in China. “Apple used to have to figure out how to actually make their stuff,” he said.

“These days, most of the really hard work is being done by Chinese engineers.”

The dropout’s caveat #

Luckey grants the US one edge: it still mints founders.

“China’s educational system, it doesn’t generate very many queen bees, and it generates a lot of worker bees,” he said. His own path makes the case. He built VR headsets as a homeschooled teenager. At 19 he dropped out of Cal State Long Beach. Peter Thiel handed him a million dollars, and he started Oculus.

“That’s not happening in China, I’ll tell you that,” he said. He sold Oculus to Facebook for $2bn at 21, then founded Anduril, now valued at $61bn.

Not just Luckey #

Other executives share the worry. Pfizer chief Albert Bourla warned that Chinese research now moves “three times the speed, half the cost.” He pointed to the Nature Index, where Chinese institutions hold nine of the top 10 places.

China has leaned in hard.

Since 2021 it has scrapped thousands of humanities and language degrees. It added new ones in AI, robotics and semiconductor engineering. As China’s technical bench deepens, the gap Luckey describes looks less like one man’s gripe.

Why it matters #

The row lands as AI and advanced manufacturing become the arena of great-power competition. If Luckey is right, the fix is slow, because it means curricula, not code. It also feeds a live worry in tech. Firms keep hiring a thin layer of elite designers, while the people who actually build things sit somewhere else.

Whether America can still teach engineering, not just entrepreneurship, may decide who wins the next decade. The counter-case is simple: the US still turns risk into companies, and that has beaten tidier systems before.
