Oura’s sleep tracking is under fire in a proposed class action lawsuit

A proposed class action lawsuit filed in California accuses Oura of misleading customers about the accuracy of its sleep tracking, alleging that its sleep-stage results have 'a coin flip's chance of being correct.' The complaint, reported by TechCrunch, cites a 2025 study that found Oura rings correctly identified sleep stages 53.18% of the time, contradicting Oura's advertised claims of 79% and 95% accuracy. The lawsuit names the Oura Ring 5, Oura Ring 4, and Oura Ring 4 Ceramic and seeks to stop the allegedly misleading claims and recover money for affected customers.

  • A proposed class action accuses Oura of overstating the accuracy of its sleep-stage tracking.
  • The complaint says Oura relies on AI estimates and cites a study that found 53.18% sleep-stage accuracy.
  • The lawsuit seeks to stop the allegedly misleading claims and recover money for affected customers.

Oura is one of the biggest names in smart rings, but a new lawsuit questions just how much faith you should place in its nightly sleep scores. A proposed class action filed in California accuses the smart ring maker of misleading customers about the accuracy of its sleep tracking, alleging that some of its sleep-stage results have “a coin flip’s chance of being correct.”

Have you found a wearable that tracks your sleep correctly?

As reported by TechCrunch, the complaintalleges that Oura’s rings can’t actually measure sleep stages with the accuracy the company advertises. Instead, it says the devices use AI models to estimate what’s happening while you sleep based on signals collected from your finger, despite Oura marketing its products with claims including “unparalleled accuracy.”

The lawsuit takes particular issue with Oura’s advertised figures. It says the company has previously claimed 79% agreement with clinical polysomnography and, more recently, has advertised 95% sleep-staging accuracy compared with a clinical sleep lab. The complaint counters with a 2025 study that it says found Oura rings correctly identified sleep stages 53.18% of the time, which appears to be where the lawyers derived the coin-flip analogy used in their rhetoric.

The Oura Ring 5, Oura Ring 4, and Oura Ring 4 Ceramic are named in the lawsuit, which argues that none of them have the sensors used in clinical sleep staging. It says sleep stages are determined using signals such as brain activity and eye movements, while Oura’s rings rely on heart rate, movement, skin temperature, and blood oxygen trends.

The complaint is asking the court to stop Oura from making what it alleges are misleading claims about the rings’ sleep-tracking capabilities. It also seeks restitution for customers who bought the products on the basis of those claims.
