What to consider before you buy
AMD’s X3D processors haven’t seen major discounts during Amazon’s Prime Day event. We’ve been looking, but no ‘Prime Day’ tags have appeared. But it turns out they weren’t needed. It’s not marked up, but we’ve seen a drop for the mighty Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
The CPU we consider the best for gaming performance is now $434. That’s a 9% discount against its $479 list price. And it’s below the Amazon’s average price for the CPU, which Camelcamelcamel notes is $455. Don’t call it a Prime Day deal, we suppose. But this is certainly a good price to pick the processor up for.

Why we love the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Best for gaming
We’re on record that the 9800X3D is our best CPU for gaming. When we reviewed the processor, it delivered best-in-class performance in all games. That’s down to its hefty L3 cache and 3D V-cache technology, allowing for swift data retrieval. It’s a leap beyond its 7800X3D predecessor, and an excellent upgrade for gaming-focused PCs.

Solid non-gaming
AMD did more than update the 7800X3D, and the 2nd-generation 3D V-cache improves the performance of non-gaming tasks like rendering and productivity. You can see the difference in our hands-on review. So this CPU isn’t a one-trick component, even though gaming is why you’d want it.
Can be overclocked
As if the base level of this CPU wasn’t enough, you can overclock it using Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO). That eeks even more performance from the silicone, although it will void the warranty. The option is there, though, and speaks to the possibilities the Ryzen 7 9800X3D offers an enthusiast.

What to consider before you buy
The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is less of a specialist gaming CPU than the 7800X3D was. But it’s still best in that field and an enthusiast choice. If you don’t need the best gaming CPU around, you could opt for the Ryzen 7 9700X, which is more affordable and can still easily sit in a mixed-use system. Or, if you’re not set on AMD just yet and only game a little on the side, Intel’s Core Ultra 7 265K is a more sensible choice for productivity and multi-core performance.
