The cloud giant's massive wind energy bet aims to power its Abilene AI data center with carbon-free electricity by 2035
Oracle just committed to 10 wind energy projects across Texas, collectively producing over 1.7 gigawatts of carbon-free electricity. To put that in perspective, 1.7 GW is roughly the output of a large nuclear power plant, enough to keep the lights on in more than 525,000 American homes for a year.
The investment is designed to feed Oracle’s Abilene data center, one of the company’s flagship AI infrastructure hubs. It also strengthens the ERCOT grid, which serves the vast majority of Texas.
Who’s supplying the wind #
Oracle didn’t build these projects alone. The portfolio draws from a roster of established renewable energy developers, including Clearway Energy, RWE, Scout Clean Energy, and ENGIE North America.
ENGIE has confirmed supply agreements for up to 568 megawatts of wind power dedicated to Oracle’s Texas operations. That single slice accounts for roughly a third of the total capacity across all 10 projects.

On the environmental side, Oracle estimates the projects will avoid approximately 1.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year compared to the ERCOT grid average.
The AI power problem #
Oracle’s executive vice president of Cloud Infrastructure, Mahesh Thiagarajan, framed the wind investment as part of the company’s broader goal: matching 100% of its AI data center electricity consumption with carbon-free energy by 2035.
Oracle has simultaneously launched a request for proposals seeking additional renewable capacity, including solar and geothermal energy in nearby New Mexico.
