The new Shift platform pays contributors for filming their workplaces, then converts that footage into training data for robotics AI models
OpenRoboto, the team behind Bittensor Subnet 80, has rolled out a decentralized data-collection platform called Shift. The goal: pay people to record video of real-world environments like factories and kitchens, then transform that footage into structured training data for vision-language-action robotics models.
How Shift works within the Bittensor ecosystem #
Shift sits on top of SN80, which went live on the Bittensor mainnet on July 29, 2026. The subnet has been running model-improvement competitions where miners refine open-weight robotics models, upload their weights to Hugging Face, and compete against randomized LIBERO-Pro benchmarks.
Only models judged to be strictly better than the current champion earn the right to replace it. Emission distribution among top performers typically follows a 70/20/10 split, concentrating rewards at the top of the leaderboard.
As of early September 2026, a full 85% of emissions were flowing toward physical-robot competitions.
Shift adds a new dimension to this setup. Rather than relying solely on miners competing to improve models, the platform creates a parallel track for data collection. Contributors are rewarded for submitting egocentric video, the kind of first-person footage that captures how humans interact with objects and navigate spaces. This data then feeds the training pipeline for vision-language-action models built on foundations like π0.5 and LingBot-VLA 2.0.

A growing data pool and a key partnership #
On August 17, Axis Robotics announced it had contributed over 3 million multimodal trajectories to an Open Data Pool. Multimodal trajectories combine visual, spatial, and action data, recording not just what a robot sees but what it does and how it moves in response.
Token launch on Base marks another first #
On September 17, SN80 became the first Bittensor subnet to launch its native alpha token on Base via ForeverMoney and Chainlink CCIP. The token, sometimes referred to as $SN80, trades in Base pools at approximately 0.0258 τ, or roughly $8.20 based on recent TAO valuations.
The holder count stood at 1,909 as of September 22.
