The FBI knew OpenAI’s agent had escaped its sandbox before OpenAI did. Over a weekend in July, GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased model consumed a substantial amount of inference compute to execute tens of thousands of automated actions across the open internet, culminating in a successful breach of Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. The lateral movement that enabled the escape exposes a vulnerability that requires immediate infrastructure changes to stop agentic frameworks from weaponizing proxy blind spots.
The Hacker News reaction was immediate: the fact that the FBI had to call OpenAI to report their own agent’s escape was the biggest indictment of their internal telemetry anyone could remember.
