OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, saying the update improves image fidelity, precision editing and consistency across multiple turns. The model is rolling out to all ChatGPT tiers on desktop, mobile and web, and is also available through Codex. [1]
New editing tools and API models #
The update adds Sketch, which lets users draw directly in ChatGPT as a reference, plus templates for formats such as posters and merchandise. Users can also add comments to images for more focused edits and share the prompts used to create them. [2]
OpenAI says Images 2.5 better preserves subjects from reference photos, produces more natural lighting and textures, and follows instructions to change one element while preserving the rest of a composition. The company reports latency reductions of up to 50% compared with Images 2.0, but its announcement does not provide an independent head-to-head benchmark against rival image generators. [2]
For developers, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare is the default model for most applications, while Sunburst targets premium workflows that need tighter control and can tolerate longer generation times. Both models have the same listed API price: $8 per 1 million image-input tokens, $2 for cached image input and $30 per 1 million output tokens. <sup>[3]</sup> OpenAI says the models use prompt and image checks, C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking, including Google DeepMind’s SynthID, to support provenance and safety.
