The AI giant may be expanding its superapp ambitions into location-based discovery, a move that could reshape how users plan travel and explore the world.
OpenAI appears to be building a new “Places” feature within ChatGPT designed to help users explore locations, check weather, and brainstorm travel ideas. OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the feature.
The reported feature would give ChatGPT users a dedicated section for discovering and researching physical locations, including restaurant recommendations, travel itineraries, and real-time weather, all surfaced through conversational AI rather than a traditional search engine or dedicated travel app.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work alongside the GPT-5.6 model series on July 9, 2026, a productivity-focused tool that automates tasks across applications and documents. ChatGPT Sites, which lets users create interactive web experiences directly inside the platform, entered public beta around the same period.
