The $1 million program, paired with up to $1 million in API credits, funds research across five countries on how AI can reshape workforce dynamics and democratic oversight.
OpenAI is putting money where its white papers are. The company announced a $1 million grant program backing 14 independent research projects designed to study how artificial intelligence can widen economic opportunity and strengthen societal resilience.
The initiative drew over 400 proposals from around the world, with selected projects spanning the US, European Union, Brazil, Singapore, and South Korea. Each project will run for six months, with results expected in 2027.
From policy paper to funding pipeline #
This grant program isn’t a standalone act of corporate generosity. It’s a direct sequel to OpenAI’s April 2026 paper, “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age,” in which the company pledged to support external research and policy development.
Beyond the $1M in direct grants, OpenAI is also offering up to $1 million in API credits to the cohort. That brings the total potential commitment to $2 million, giving researchers both funding and compute resources to run their experiments.
The 14 projects are split into two buckets. The first, labeled “Building a more open economy,” includes eight projects tackling workforce dynamics, taxation strategies, ownership models, benefits systems, and how productivity gains from AI get distributed. The second bucket, “Building a more resilient society,” features six projects focused on AI safety, risk measurement, information sharing, and tools for democratic oversight.
Organizations involved include the American Enterprise Institute and the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
What the projects actually cover #
Eight of the 14 projects are examining how tax codes might need to evolve when AI automates tasks, ownership models, benefits systems, and how productivity gains get distributed.
The resilience-focused projects tackle risk measurement, information sharing between governments, companies, and researchers, and democratic oversight tools for AI systems that affect millions of people.
Why this matters beyond OpenAI #
The selection of over 400 proposals signals significant demand from the research community for this kind of funding. API credits from OpenAI could meaningfully change what kinds of experiments researchers are able to run.
The six-month timeline is aggressive by academic standards, where multi-year studies are the norm. Whether that speed produces genuinely useful policy recommendations will be the real test when results arrive in 2027.
