OpenAI is getting ready for a major release on Tuesday after product lead Tibo Sottiaux confirmed the date on X. This has led many to speculate that the first GPT-6 models could be available before DevDay.
Tibo had earlier hinted that the upcoming updates would match what developers usually see at a full DevDay conference. Over the weekend, when asked about the release timing, he said: "it’s also still coming in Tuesday."
While OpenAI has obviously not mentioned exactly what's coming tomorrow, we suspect the company will drop its GPT-6 Sol, Terra, and Luna models. Astra has impressed people with its reasoning and complex capabilities, but it remains a heavy, expensive model. That is why so many builders are holding out hope for GPT-6 Luna and Sol instead. In OpenAI's tiered setup, Luna typically serves as the lightweight, cheap option for routine coding tasks and monitoring, while Sol sits in the middle as a capable daily driver.
That said, the chatter mostly kicked off because many users feel like the usage limits have been especially tight lately. Users on higher tiers have been using up their allowances quickly, and a big DevDay-style release could either lift spirits or make things worse if it gets delayed again.
And speaking of OpenAI's DevDay 2026, it's set for September 29 in San Francisco, just a week after Tuesday. It would be unusual for a company to ship highly anticipated models a week ahead of its own big event, but OpenAI might have more surprises in store for developers at the event. So pushing out the new models a week early could be a strategic move to clear the decks for other interesting announcements.
But the biggest elephant in the room is still hardware. OpenAI has been looking at physical devices for some time now, as shown by its investment in Opal Electronics and the Codex Micro keypad, which it shipped over the summer.
The screenless device that it is developing together with Jony Ive is still a 2027 prospect, so no one really expects it to be announced on Tuesday. That said, a surprise hint wouldn't be entirely out of character.
