# OpenAI partners with social media firms to combat AI election misinformation

A 27-company voluntary accord aims to curb deceptive AI content across elections in more than 50 countries, but skeptics question whether good intentions alone will be enough.

OpenAI is launching new partnerships to combat AI driven election misinformation, expanding its safeguards ahead of upcoming elections in the US and abroad, according to an Axios [report](https://www.axios.com/2026/05/27/openai-cyber-misinformation-defenses-elections).

The company will provide live vote counts from The Associated Press starting this fall in the US and Brazil. OpenAI is also partnering with Democracy Works to show reliable information about voting and registration processes.

The push comes as AI tools become more embedded in politics, from campaign content to voter information searches. OpenAI is also offering Codex Security and its Trusted Access for Cyber program to registered voting system manufacturers in the US.

OpenAI will brief the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors on its latest cyber capabilities. The company is also backing US legislation aimed at increasing transparency around AI generated political content, including bills targeting deceptive deepfakes.

The effort reflects a broader shift in which AI companies are beginning to face the same election integrity pressures that social media platforms have dealt with since 2016. As voters increasingly rely on chatbots and AI tools for information, OpenAI is trying to reduce the risk that synthetic content or inaccurate answers distort election processes.
