OpenAI has removed a small limit that caused a large amount of daily friction: ChatGPT and Codex can now connect to more than one Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Contacts account.
You can finally stop treating your personal inbox and your work inbox as separate lives inside ChatGPT. According to 9to5Mac, OpenAI DX engineer Gabriel Chua said on August 28, 2026 that users can now connect multiple Gmail and Google Calendar accounts to ChatGPT and Codex, with Google Contacts included in the same setup flow.
It was a basic gap. Before this change, each Google connector could be tied to only one account, which made the feature awkward for exactly the people most likely to use it. A founder with a personal Gmail and a Google Workspace account had to pick one. A consultant working across client calendars had to disconnect, reconnect, or give up on the assistant having the right context.
OpenAI's own forums show how ordinary the problem had become. A thread called "Support multiple Gmail / Google accounts per ChatGPT account" was opened on August 14, 2026, with users asking for personal and work Gmail accounts, plus old archives, to sit under one ChatGPT login. A separate request on the OpenAI Codex GitHub repository, issue 20500, asked for multiple named accounts per app or connector, including personal Gmail, work Gmail, client Google Drive, and company Google Drive.
That tells you why this update matters. It isn't a shiny new AI trick. It's the kind of boring account plumbing that decides whether you actually use the tool after the demo ends.

Turning it on is simple. Open Plugins in ChatGPT's sidebar, search for the connector - Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts - then click the gear icon on the one you've already linked. From there, you can add another Google account and complete the usual Google authorization flow. OpenAI's Help Center now says some apps support more than one connected account, though availability still depends on the app, account, plan, region, and workspace settings.
The practical difference is immediate. Ask ChatGPT to find a free hour and it can check more than one calendar when the connected accounts support it. Ask it to look for something specific: a receipt, a flight booking, a customer thread. You don't have to run the same search twice across two inboxes. That's the point. The assistant becomes useful where your work already is, not only where your first connected account happened to be.
The old limit lasted too long #
Context matters here. OpenAI first rolled out Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts connectors in ChatGPT for Pro users on August 12, 2025, with Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans following after that, BleepingComputer reported at the time. OpenAI's own release notes from August 2025 said the connectors let ChatGPT reference emails, calendar events, and contacts inside chat.
A year later, OpenAI is still fixing the edges of that launch. That isn't unusual for enterprise software, but it does show the difference between adding a connector and making it fit real work. Real users don't have one neat identity. They have old Gmail accounts, company domains, client logins, shared calendars, and inboxes that hold years of decisions no project-management tool ever captured.
Codex makes the same point from the developer side. The GitHub issue asked for explicit account selection and hard privacy boundaries, so a session wouldn't silently mix a personal mailbox with a work tenant or client workspace. The new Google multi-account support answers part of that request, but not all of it. The broader issue asks for named connections across other providers too - Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft 365 - and it still sits open.
OpenAI is removing reasons to leave #
Look past the settings screen and this is about distribution. Google's Gemini starts inside Workspace. Microsoft's Copilot starts inside Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365. ChatGPT doesn't have that home-field advantage. It has to earn its way into your daily tools one connection at a time.
Fixing multi-account Google access doesn't give OpenAI something Google or Microsoft can't copy. Frankly, they already own the furniture. What it does is remove one obvious reason for you to bounce back to Gemini or Copilot whenever a task crosses from one inbox into another.

There are still limits. OpenAI's Help Center says app availability can depend on your plan, region, account, supported surface, workspace, and administrator settings. In managed workspaces, an admin may need to enable an app or approve a domain before users can connect it. Provider permissions matter too, because Google authorization and ChatGPT workspace controls both shape what the assistant can read or do.
So the one-account cap is gone. The larger question is whether OpenAI can make connected apps feel reliable enough for the messy way people actually work: two calendars, three inboxes, a client Drive, and a company policy sitting over all of it.
