Plus and Pro users can authorize eligible requests in tools including Notion, Vercel and Devin, with per-app caps drawing from their shared weekly allowance.

Why it matters #
OpenAI is turning ChatGPT plan capacity into a distribution and billing layer for third-party AI tools. Users get simpler access, but each integration consumes a shared allowance and may carry separate app charges.
OpenAI is extending ChatGPT Plus and Pro usage into selected third-party apps, letting users authorize eligible AI requests there without creating or sharing an OpenAI API key. The feature is described in an OpenAI Help Center update dated September 29th, which says those requests draw on usage included with ChatGPT Work and Codex.
The change takes ChatGPT beyond an identity button. A user can sign in to an app with ChatGPT and separately choose whether its AI requests consume their plan allowance. For OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman (@sama), whose early career included co-founding Loopt and later leading Y Combinator, the product expands ChatGPT's reach through outside software rather than asking users to stay inside OpenAI's own interface. That distribution reading is an inference from the product design, not a stated rationale from OpenAI.
OpenAI lists four open-source tool examples: OpenCode, OpenClaw, Pi by Earendil and T3. Its commercial list includes Hyperagent, Hermes Agent from Nous Research, Vorflux, Amp, Dactyl, Kilo Code, Warp, Conductor, Devin by Cognition, Notion and Vercel. Eligibility differs by type: OpenAI says all users can connect supported open-source tools, while commercial tools are available to Plus and Pro subscribers. An app may further restrict the feature to some of its own plans.
Several services already support ChatGPT identity sign-in without sharing a user's plan allowance. OpenAI names Airtable, Canva, GitLab, HubSpot and Supabase as compatible with sign-in but currently unavailable for token sharing. The separation matters for users: logging in does not automatically approve plan use, and plan use does not by itself give an app access to ChatGPT conversations or memories. Identity sign-in shares a user's name, email address and profile picture, according to OpenAI's separate sign-in documentation.
The usage controls are caps on a common allowance, not extra capacity. Users can set a weekly limit for each app in ChatGPT's Settings under Usage; OpenAI says the limit sets the share of total weekly usage an app can consume. An app can hit its cap while the user still has plan usage left. If the overall allowance runs out, an app can use ChatGPT credits only if the user has separately enabled credit use and has credits available. OpenAI also warns that enabling automatic credit purchases can lead to charges after included usage is exhausted.
The architecture gives developers another way to bring OpenAI models into their products while shifting usage accounting to the subscriber's plan. OpenAI's developer documentation describes the open-source flow as an optional permission for eligible Responses API requests, authorized through an OAuth access token. It also says commercial and remotely hosted apps should use a separate interest form. That makes the published open-source route more accessible in principle, while commercial integrations remain selected rather than open enrollment.
The plan route has its own technical boundaries. OpenAI's developer docs for the open-source path list capabilities that are unsupported in this preview, including image generation, file search, Code Interpreter, native computer use and hosted connectors. The offer therefore does not amount to a portable copy of every ChatGPT feature. It gives supported apps access to a defined slice of account usage under OpenAI's limits.
For users, the trade is convenience against a shared quota and another layer of billing terms. OpenAI says app usage can vary with the tool and task, and its usage settings do not provide action-level details about what happened inside an app. A partner may also charge separately for its own subscription, infrastructure or premium features. The setup makes ChatGPT plan capacity a distribution channel for outside products; it also keeps OpenAI in control of which integrations qualify, how much they can consume and when usage can spill into paid credits.
