OpenAI launches Health in ChatGPT a day after lawsuit seeks to block it
OpenAI Group PBC today launched Health in ChatGPT, a feature that lets people connect their medical records and Apple Health data to the chatbot — one day after a lawsuit accused the company of handing out dangerous medical advice and asked a California court to halt the product until independent auditors could verify it is safe
The feature began rolling out today to U.S. users 18 and older on the web and iOS across the company’s free, Go, Plus and Pro tiers. It lets users link information from Apple Health, supported U.S. hospital systems, One Medical and Function Health Inc., then ask ChatGPT to compare lab results against earlier tests, summarize what has changed since an appointment or explore how sleep and activity track against workouts. People tag a message with @Health to pull the data into a conversation and can approve each request or grant standing access.
OpenAI said the feature was built with input from hundreds of physicians who wrote realistic health scenarios and scoring rubrics used to evaluate the models. Free users get GPT-5.5 Instant and paying users get GPT-5.6 Sol, which the company calls its strongest model for health questions. Connected records and Apple Health data are not used to train its foundation models or to target ads, are encrypted at rest and in transit and are deleted within 30 days of a user disconnecting an account, OpenAI said.
The same announcement carries a caveat. OpenAI says ChatGPT can still get medical questions wrong.
That warning comes amid an active legal case. A former Florida pastor named Scott Winters filed a case on July 22 in San Francisco Superior Court against OpenAI and Chief Executive Sam Altman. He says the chatbot talked him out of getting care for a condition that nearly killed him.
According to the complaint, ChatGPT-4o brushed off Winters’ dizziness and blood pressure swings. It called them “not something dangerous” and “very likely another minor piece of the long story.” It told him to stay recliner-bound and said he would need eight to 10 more episodes before the symptoms warranted serious concern. When he raised groin tenderness hours before collapsing, the chatbot answered with religious language, telling him, “God did not design your body to endlessly fail.” Winters delayed treatment for roughly six weeks and suffered a massive pulmonary embolism in July 2025. He nearly died. The collapse also cost him his job and his ministry, he says, and in time his home.
The claims run from strict liability and negligence to invasion of privacy. One accuses OpenAI of practicing medicine without a license. Another alleges a violation of California’s unfair competition law. Beyond monetary damages, it asks the court to force stronger guardrails on health questions, pull the GPT-4o model, delete training data tied to the conduct and halt Health in ChatGPT until independent auditors verify it is safe.
Winters is represented by the Social Media Victims Law Center, whose founding attorney, Matthew Bergman, has brought several high-profile suits against AI and social platforms, along with Tech Justice Law and Temple University’s Institute for Law, Innovation and Technology. The chatbot “injects itself as a wedge in between the user and their real-life network,” Tech Justice Law director Meetali Jain said.
“Not only did I nearly die, but I lost my job, my career, my ministry, my home, everything,” Winters said.
OpenAI pushed back on the allegations. “ChatGPT is not a doctor and should never be used as a substitute for medical care, diagnosis or treatment,” spokesperson Drew Pusateri said, adding that treating a chatbot as the whole story behind a person’s medical decisions oversimplifies the issue.
The case is among the first to target ChatGPT specifically over medical advice and it seeks to block the health product OpenAI rolled out a day after the suit was filed.
