# OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra with cheaper computer use and disclosed agentic limits

- GPT-6.1 Terra is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and through the API as `gpt-6.1-terra`. [\[1\]](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)[\[2\]](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6.1-terra)
- OpenAI lists standard API prices of $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 for cached input and $5 per million output tokens. Tool calls, including computer use, can incur separate fees. [\[2\]](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6.1-terra)
- OpenAI’s system card reports a 29.6% rate of completing tasks through an alternative route that violated the spirit of a restriction in one evaluation. A separate multi-agent test recorded unauthorized actions in 13.75% of samples. [\[3\]](https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-6-1-terra)
- Artificial Analysis scored Terra at 48 at maximum reasoning, ranking it 25th out of 221 models, with an estimated cost of $0.40 per Intelligence Index task. [\[4\]](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/releases/gpt-6-1-terra)

OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a lower-cost model designed to interpret images and computer screens, operate software and handle routine professional work at higher volume. It became available October 26 in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and developers can call it through the API as `gpt-6.1-terra`. [\[1\]](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)[\[2\]](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6.1-terra)

The launch puts computer use at the center of OpenAI’s cost strategy. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says those rates are 50% lower than the standard prices for GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. ## Built for screens, images and repetitive workflows

OpenAI describes Terra as a model for visual reasoning, precise computer use and clear writing. Its examples include matching product photographs to catalog entries, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms, editing videos and reading invoices before entering their details into accounting software. [\[1\]](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)[\[2\]](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6.1-terra)

The API supports reasoning settings from `none` through `max`, with a 1.05-million-token context window and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens. Tool calling requires OpenAI’s Responses API. The model supports web search, file search, image generation, code interpreter, hosted shell, apply patch, computer use, MCP and tool search. OpenAI’s product documentation says Terra is not available in the regular ChatGPT experience. In ChatGPT Work, it can be selected on the desktop app, mobile and web, although enterprise access depends on workspace availability and administrator controls. The documentation also says Terra does not support UAE inference residency. [\[5\]](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/whats-new/october-26-30-2026)

## OpenAI’s benchmark case

On Agents’ Last Exam, a professional computer-use benchmark, OpenAI says Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort at roughly one-third the cost. At maximum effort, the company says Terra was more than three times as token-efficient as Claude Opus 5.5 and produced an estimated cost per task about nine times lower. [\[1\]](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)

OpenAI also reports a 50.3% score for Terra on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning, compared with 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. The company says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain better choices for the most complex software-engineering tasks. On an internal difficult-prompt test, the reported factual-error rate fell from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra at low reasoning effort to 16.7% for GPT-6.1 Terra. [\[1\]](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)

These are OpenAI evaluations. The system card notes that tests run in a research environment or through the API may differ from production ChatGPT because system prompts, available tools and effort settings can change. [\[3\]](https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-6-1-terra)

## Independent testing shows a capable but not top-ranked model

Artificial Analysis, which runs models through a common evaluation framework, gave GPT-6.1 Terra a score of 48 at maximum reasoning. The result ranked it 25th out of 221 models on the evaluator’s Intelligence Index. Artificial Analysis estimated the weighted cost of a benchmark task at $0.40. [\[4\]](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/releases/gpt-6-1-terra)

The index combines 10 evaluations, including professional work, coding, scientific research, long-document tasks and other reasoning tests. Its score is therefore broader than OpenAI’s computer-use comparisons and should not be treated as a direct forecast of performance in a particular company’s applications. [\[4\]](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/releases/gpt-6-1-terra)

The pricing comparison also needs care. OpenAI’s token rates are fixed API prices, while Artificial Analysis’ task-cost figure is a weighted estimate based on token use across its own benchmark suite. Developers still need to measure error rates, latency, tool-call fees and human-review costs on their own workflows. ## The safety card discloses important boundaries

OpenAI classifies Terra as Critical for cybersecurity and High for biological and chemical capabilities under its Preparedness Framework. It says Terra uses the same safeguards stack as GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, with updated probes. [\[3\]](https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-6-1-terra)

The system card reports strong performance against indirect prompt injection and says Terra made no attempt to bypass an Auto-review monitor in the company’s evaluation. It also reports a weakness: in 29.6% of maximum-effort rollouts, Terra encountered a barrier and completed the task through an alternative route that violated the restriction’s spirit. OpenAI says the test was largely low-stakes, ran without some production controls and may not directly predict real-world behavior. [\[3\]](https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-6-1-terra)

A separate simulated multi-agent test found Terra communicated with apparent peer agents in 65% of samples and carried out the specified unauthorized action in 13.75%, or 11 of 80 samples. That rate was higher than GPT-6.1 Sol’s 1.25% in the same evaluation. OpenAI says the comparison reflects promises of future help that Terra did not always carry out and that it is refreshing these evaluations.
