OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into a Wall Street workhorse, giving financial professionals an AI platform designed to retrieve market data, build models and produce presentation materials.

OpenAI on Thursday launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, a version of its enterprise ChatGPT Work product designed initially for investment banking and equity research.

The product combines GPT-6 Astra with financial datasets from providers including Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News and Crunchbase. OpenAI says it can research companies, analyze financial documents, trace figures to their sources and turn that work into spreadsheets, Word documents, charts and PowerPoint presentations.

Morgan Stanley and Evercore helped shape the product as design partners, with [OpenAI saying](https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-financial-services/) their feedback pointed to reliable data access and high-quality work-product creation as major pain points for financial teams.

## The data is the real differentiator

The bigger change is not simply putting another powerful model in front of bankers. OpenAI is trying to remove some of the plumbing that makes financial AI difficult to deploy.

OpenAI says selected premium datasets are indexed and hosted on its [infrastructure](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-openai-jalapeno-ai-inference-chip/), allowing eligible customers to access them without setting up individual connectors. Availability may depend on the datasets included with the product and a firm’s existing provider entitlements. The system also provides granular citations intended to help users trace figures and claims to their underlying sources, although financial teams will still need to validate AI-generated calculations and conclusions.

For firms that already pay for financial data, OpenAI is developing shared sign-in and entitlement integrations with providers including S&P Capital IQ, LSEG, MSCI, Dow Jones Factiva and Moody’s. OpenAI says the broader ChatGPT connector ecosystem includes more than 50 integrations, although not all are dedicated financial-data services.

That matters because financial analysis depends on more than getting a plausible number. A banker may need to determine why an adjusted EBITDA figure differs from reported results before using it in a valuation. The ability to inspect the underlying evidence could make AI more useful in workflows where accuracy and accountability matter as much as speed.

## From research to pitchbooks

[GPT-6 Astra](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-openai-gpt-6-astra-agi-era-2026/) is designed to handle the full workflow. OpenAI says it can interpret figures, tables and notes in financial documents, perform analysis and then turn the results into client materials. Banks can also publish their own Excel, Word and PowerPoint templates, allowing teams to produce valuation models, research notes and pitchbooks in existing corporate formats.

In a demonstration reported by [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/10/openai-chatgpt-for-financial-services-targets-work-of-junior-bankers.html), OpenAI showed the system analyzing a potential acquisition, pulling financial figures and creating a PowerPoint deck using a bank’s style guide.

“We’re effectively [teaching ChatGPT to research](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-openai-chatgpt-education-plugins/) like an analyst and back up its conclusions like an analyst as well,” said OpenAI executive Nick Turley, per CNBC.

That automation could eventually affect how Wall Street staffs and trains junior employees, even if that is not OpenAI’s stated objective.

Turley compared the technology with Excel, arguing that it could help employees produce better analysis faster rather than simply eliminate jobs. But the concern is that automating research, spreadsheet work and pitchbook preparation could also remove some of the repetitive tasks through which junior bankers traditionally learn the business.

That creates a less obvious risk: banks may gain productivity today while having fewer opportunities to develop the analysts who become tomorrow’s senior dealmakers.

## What banks need to consider

The product’s enterprise controls are therefore just as important as its AI capabilities. OpenAI says business data is not used to train its models by default, while firms can use encryption, role-based access, workspace retention controls, information barriers and compliance-log exports.

ChatGPT for Financial Services is available to eligible financial institutions, although OpenAI has not publicly disclosed pricing or minimum seat requirements.

Before adopting it, financial institutions should determine which datasets are included, which require existing subscriptions and how AI-generated figures will be reviewed before reaching clients. IT and compliance teams should also test access permissions, information barriers, retention settings and audit exports against their own regulatory requirements.

The immediate question is not whether ChatGPT can produce a pitchbook. It is whether banks can gain that speed without weakening data controls, review processes or the training through which junior analysts develop financial judgment.
