OpenAI launches $100 ChatGPT Business seats for heavier AI workloads

OpenAI launched $100-per-user monthly Premium seats for ChatGPT Business on August 25, priced at five times the $20 Standard rate and advertised with five times the usage, while allowing workspace owners to mix both seat types. The Premium tier removes the five-hour limit on Standard seats and includes the same core products—ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex—but its practical value depends on usage patterns, as OpenAI notes the upgrade does not increase limits for every model or feature.

Why it matters #

OpenAI can charge heavy users five times the Standard price without moving an entire workspace upmarket. Mixed seats let small teams concentrate the higher spend on a few intensive users.

OpenAI said in a post on X on August 25th that Premium seats are now available for ChatGPT Business, giving customers a higher-capacity option inside the self-serve workspace plan.

https://x.com/OpenAI/status/2092335305366069305 Premium costs $100 per user per month when purchased on an annual plan, or $125 with monthly billing. The corresponding Standard seat costs $20 annually or $25 monthly. OpenAI is therefore charging exactly five times the Standard price for a seat advertised as including five times the usage.

The release completes a two-stage rollout. OpenAI first announced Premium seats on August 10th and opened a waitlist ahead of general availability. OpenAI updated that announcement on August 25th to say the seats had launched. A promotion offering early registrants as much as $500 in workspace credits ended before the wider release.

A capacity upgrade, rather than a separate product

Premium includes the same core products as Standard: ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex. The distinction is capacity. OpenAI says Premium provides five times the included usage and removes the five-hour limit applied to Standard seats. Its allowances reset weekly, and customers can buy shared workspace credits if included capacity runs out.

The five-times claim has an important boundary. OpenAI's models and limits documentation says Premium provides more included usage for ChatGPT Work and Codex, while individual ChatGPT model allowances are separate. OpenAI also warns that the upgrade does not increase the limit for every model or feature.

That means the practical value will depend on how a customer uses the workspace. ChatGPT Work and Codex consumption varies with the selected model, task size, reasoning effort and amount of work performed. OpenAI does not reduce that usage to a fixed number of prompts. Its documentation says longer and cloud-based tasks can consume more of an allowance than shorter local messages.

Premium's clearest advantage is the removal of the five-hour ceiling, which allows a heavy user to consume the weekly allowance in longer, uninterrupted sessions. Standard seats continue to operate with rolling five-hour limits. Both seat types can draw on purchased workspace credits for eligible work after their included allowances are exhausted.

OpenAI lets customers reserve Premium for the expensive users

Workspace owners can mix Standard and Premium capacity instead of upgrading every employee. Seats can be assigned and reassigned as workloads change, according to OpenAI's ChatGPT Business overview. That structure lets a small business keep occasional users on $20 annual seats while paying $100 for developers, analysts or operators running sustained agentic tasks.

OpenAI requires each Business workspace to maintain at least two paid seats, but those can be any combination of Standard and Premium. One seat of each type meets the minimum. The current signup documentation sets a 200-seat limit for the self-serve plan.

The billing mechanics favor adding capacity quickly and removing it slowly. OpenAI's billing documentation says new seats are activated immediately and generate a prorated charge for the rest of the billing period. Reductions take effect at the next renewal. Customers are billed for purchased capacity even when a seat has not been assigned to a member.

Premium remains part of the self-serve Business offering. It does not include API usage, which OpenAI bills separately, and the plan does not support invoices, purchase orders, bank transfers, ACH or negotiated payment terms. Organizations requiring those arrangements are directed toward OpenAI's contracted products.

The launch gives OpenAI a direct capacity upsell between its ordinary Business seat and a sales-led Enterprise agreement. OpenAI has kept the products attached to each Business seat largely consistent and put the price difference into higher allowances. For teams already hitting limits in Codex or ChatGPT Work, Premium turns that demand into a predictable subscription charge without requiring the entire workspace to move to the higher tier.
