# OpenAI expected to appoint Paul Christiano to Foundation board

The AI alignment pioneer who helped create RLHF returns to OpenAI's orbit in a governance role overseeing safety strategy

Paul Christiano, one of the most influential researchers in AI alignment, has been appointed to the board of the OpenAI Foundation. It’s a homecoming of sorts: Christiano spent four years at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021, where he led the language model alignment team and helped develop reinforcement learning from human feedback, the technique that made ChatGPT possible.

## Who is Paul Christiano

After leaving OpenAI in 2021, Christiano founded the Alignment Research Center (ARC), an independent research organization focused on the technical challenges of making advanced AI systems safe. He also held senior roles at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the US AI Safety Institute, giving him a rare combination of research depth and policy experience.

## The Foundation’s evolving role

The OpenAI Foundation itself is a relatively new entity, born out of OpenAI’s major recapitalization in late 2025. That restructuring transformed the original nonprofit framework into the Foundation, which now holds an equity stake of approximately 26% in OpenAI Group PBC. At post-recapitalization valuations, that stake is worth roughly $130 billion.

The Foundation has committed to deploying $1 billion within its first year on programs spanning AI resilience, life sciences, and civil society initiatives.

As of July 2026, the Foundation’s board included eight members. Bret Taylor serves as chair, with Sam Altman also sitting on the board. The Foundation also houses a Safety and Security Committee chaired by Zico Kolter, a Carnegie Mellon professor specializing in AI robustness. Christiano’s expertise in alignment research slots naturally into that committee’s mandate.

## Why this appointment matters now

OpenAI’s safety credentials have been a recurring source of controversy. The departure of several prominent safety researchers in 2024, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever and superalignment lead Jan Leike, raised serious questions about whether the company was deprioritizing the work it claimed to care most about.

The Foundation’s structure theoretically gives it independence from OpenAI’s operational leadership. Its 26% equity stake provides financial leverage, and its board has oversight responsibilities that extend beyond advisory opinions.

The $1 billion the Foundation plans to deploy in its first year gives it real programmatic power. Christiano’s NIST and AI Safety Institute experience means he has existing relationships with the people writing the rules governing AI oversight.
