The company's first business hire and longtime chief operating officer is leaving to build something new after leading OpenAI's commercial expansion
Brad Lightcap, the executive who arguably did more than anyone outside Sam Altman to build OpenAI into a commercial force, is leaving the company. After nearly ten years and a string of roles that took him from first business hire to CFO to COO, Lightcap announced his departure on August 11, 2026, to launch a new venture.
From first hire to the exit door #
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, coming from Y Combinator where he had worked as an investor. He was the organization’s first dedicated business hire, which meant he was essentially employee zero on the commercial side of a place that, at the time, still thought of itself primarily as a nonprofit AI research lab.
From that starting point, he built out OpenAI’s go-to-market operation, took on the CFO role, and eventually became COO, overseeing everything from major partnerships to the OpenAI Startup Fund. His trajectory inside the company shifted in April 2026, when he moved out of the COO seat and into a special-projects role focused on complex deals and investments. In that new capacity, he reported directly to Altman. The reshuffle coincided with broader leadership changes, including AGI development CEO Fidji Simo and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch both taking personal medical leaves around the same time.
