ChatGPT Mil will support secure unclassified work across planning, policy, logistics and administration and is designed to scale to more than 3 million Department personnel.

The US Department of War has launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil, expanding the military’s use of generative AI across a platform designed to serve more than 3 million personnel.

ChatGPT Mil has been accredited to handle Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, allowing personnel to use the system for secure unclassified work across areas including planning, policy, logistics and administration.

The deployment follows an enterprise partnership between the Department and OpenAI established in 2025 and marks the adoption phase of that agreement.

ChatGPT Mil provides access to chat, files, projects and custom GPTs inside the Department’s secure environment, with additional capabilities expected to be introduced over time.

The Department said the system is intended to accelerate routine work and allow personnel to dedicate more time to higher priority tasks across the Joint Force.

The addition of ChatGPT Mil also expands GenAI.mil into a broader multi model AI environment, with the Department integrating multiple frontier AI systems for military use.

The rollout is being led through the Chief Digital and AI Office and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering.

The Department said it plans to continue expanding the use of frontier AI across the Joint Force as part of efforts to use the technology for military operations and decision making.

The deployment also forms part of the White House AI Action Plan, which has pushed federal agencies to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across government.
