OpenAI CFO Says July ARR Topped Q2, but the Metric Remains Unclear OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees on July 29 that annualized recurring revenue in July exceeded the entire second quarter, according to CNBC, but the company did not disclose a dollar figure or define the metric, making the comparison difficult to interpret. Friar and board chair Bret Taylor credited growth to the GPT-5.6 model family, ChatGPT Work, and Codex adoption, though OpenAI previously reported over $20 billion in ARR for 2025. OpenAI CFO Says July ARR Topped Q2, but the Metric Remains Unclear - OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees on July 29 that annualized recurring revenue in July exceeded the entire second quarter, according to CNBC. No dollar figure was disclosed. 1 https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/29/openai-cfo-sarah-friar-tells-employees-arr-in-july-topped-all-of-q2.html - ARR is a forward-looking, non-GAAP measure of recurring revenue and is distinct from revenue recognized during a month or quarter. 2 https://support.stripe.com/questions/understanding-monthly-recurring-revenue-%28mrr%29-and-annual-recurring-revenue-%28arr%29 - OpenAI previously reported more than $20 billion in ARR for 2025 and said in April that enterprise products generated more than 40% of revenue. 3 https://openai.com/index/a-business-that-scales-with-the-value-of-intelligence/ 4 https://openai.com/index/next-phase-of-enterprise-ai/ - Anthropic reported a $47 billion revenue run rate in May, but accounting differences complicate comparisons between the companies. 6 https://www.anthropic.com/news/series-h 7 https://www.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/3THzRsqNXLX2XG414QmL-WSJNewsPaper-4-6-2026.pdf OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar told employees Wednesday, July 29, that the company’s annualized recurring revenue in July exceeded the entire second quarter, according to CNBC, as executives discussed growth and competition with Anthropic. 1 https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/29/openai-cfo-sarah-friar-tells-employees-arr-in-july-topped-all-of-q2.html Friar and board chair Bret Taylor credited momentum to the GPT-5.6 model family, the ChatGPT Work agent and growing adoption of Codex, CNBC reported. “And Q2 was no slouch,” Friar said, according to a partial transcript reviewed by the network. 1 https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/29/openai-cfo-sarah-friar-tells-employees-arr-in-july-topped-all-of-q2.html The statement points to faster growth, but its scale remains unresolved. OpenAI did not disclose a July dollar amount, second-quarter revenue or its definition of the metric. Without those details, the comment should not be read as confirmation that OpenAI collected more revenue in July than during April, May and June combined. The comparison mixes two different periods Annualized recurring revenue is generally a point-in-time estimate rather than revenue already recognized under standard accounting rules. Stripe, for example, calculates ARR by multiplying monthly recurring revenue by 12 and describes the metric as a forward-looking measure of expected recurring revenue. 2 https://support.stripe.com/questions/understanding-monthly-recurring-revenue-%28mrr%29-and-annual-recurring-revenue-%28arr%29 That makes Friar’s reported comparison difficult to interpret. “ARR in July” could refer to the annualized value of OpenAI’s recurring business at the end of the month. “The entire second quarter” could refer to the corresponding run rate at June 30, ARR added between April and June, or recognized revenue during those three months. Each interpretation would describe a materially different rate of growth. ARR also lacks a universally applied definition. Companies differ over whether the calculation includes usage-based sales, cloud-marketplace transactions, contracts not yet billed or revenue shared with commercial partners. OpenAI has not publicly provided a reconciliation between its ARR and recognized revenue. OpenAI’s most detailed public revenue statement said ARR increased from $2 billion in 2023 to $6 billion in 2024 and more than $20 billion in 2025. Friar also said available computing capacity increased from 0.2 gigawatts in 2023 to about 1.9 gigawatts in 2025. 3 https://openai.com/index/a-business-that-scales-with-the-value-of-intelligence/ OpenAI is pushing its products deeper into workplace use OpenAI released GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work on July 9. ChatGPT Work can operate across connected applications, files and websites, with Codex technology built into the product for coding and task execution. 5 https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-your-most-ambitious-work/ At launch, OpenAI said more than 5 million people used Codex each week, including more than 1 million who used it for work outside software development. The company also said nearly every team inside OpenAI, including finance and sales, used ChatGPT Work and Codex. 5 https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-for-your-most-ambitious-work/ Those figures are company-reported usage metrics, not independent measurements of paying customers or revenue. They nevertheless help explain why Friar and Taylor presented the products as drivers of the July acceleration. OpenAI said in April that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly users and that enterprise products accounted for more than 40% of revenue. The company expects enterprise revenue to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. 4 That was up from about 20% when Friar joined OpenAI in 2024, she told the Associated Press. 8 https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/openai-focuses-on-business-users-amid-competition-with-rival-anthropic Anthropic has intensified the enterprise contest The employee meeting followed months of internal attention to Anthropic, whose Claude products have gained traction with software developers and corporate customers. OpenAI revenue chief Denise Dresser previously told employees that Anthropic’s focus on coding had given it an “early wedge,” according to an internal memo reported by The Verge and described by the Associated Press. 8 https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/openai-focuses-on-business-users-amid-competition-with-rival-anthropic Anthropic said its revenue run rate crossed $47 billion in May. The company had reported a $30 billion run rate in April, up from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025. 6 Anthropic separately said in February that Claude Code had passed a $2.5 billion run rate. 9 https://www.anthropic.com/news/anthropic-raises-30-billion-series-g-funding-380-billion-post-money-valuation The headline figures are not directly comparable. The Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic counts sales of its technology through cloud partners as revenue while OpenAI does not. Anthropic distributes Claude through Amazon, Google and Microsoft cloud platforms, while OpenAI also has commercial and revenue-sharing relationships that can affect how sales are presented. 7 https://www.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/3THzRsqNXLX2XG414QmL-WSJNewsPaper-4-6-2026.pdf The July message gives employees a new indicator that OpenAI believes growth accelerated after its latest product releases. It does not provide the company’s July revenue, second-quarter sales, profitability or a precise definition of the ARR comparison. Those omissions prevent an independent assessment of the magnitude of the reported acceleration.
