- OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Teens with stronger protections enabled by default.
- Teens get learning-focused tools, while parents get Quiet Hours, settings controls, and limited safety alerts.
- The move comes as AI creates risks that traditional parental controls weren’t designed to handle.
Parents today face a problem that didn’t really exist a few years ago. Today, AI can hold a conversation with a child, respond to sensitive questions, generate content, and potentially become something far more personal than another app on a phone. We’ve already seen how messy that can get: Google’s own AI Search tools have faced scrutiny over the risks they could pose to younger users. In light of these concerns, OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Teens, a specialized version of its chatbot for 13- to 17-year-olds that prioritizes learning over instant answers while layering in parental controls for added oversight.
Rather than sit back and watch, OpenAI is taking a more proactive approach with ChatGPT for Teens. According to the company, the experience applies additional protections around self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. Parents with linked teen accounts can set Quiet Hours, manage selected settings, and receive limited safety notifications, including new alerts related to eating disorders.
The company isn’t treating safety as simply a matter of blocking things, either. ChatGPT for Teens includes Study Mode, quizzes, learning visualizations, and a Responsible Homework Reminder that can redirect students toward working through problems instead of simply asking AI for the answer.
OpenAI OpenAI is also addressing something that makes AI particularly different from other technologies. ChatGPT shouldn’t encourage emotional dependence, use romantic language, or imply that it has feelings or consciousness. Reminders to take breaks and cues that reinforce ChatGPT’s identity as AI are also part of the experience.
While parents can restrict an app, block a website, or set a bedtime, they can’t realistically predict every conversation a teenager might have with an AI chatbot. So, for once, the burden isn’t entirely on parents to figure it out. OpenAI is putting more of the responsibility on ChatGPT itself. Whether those safeguards work as intended is another question.
