# OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in talks to enhance AI safety

Three of the world's most powerful AI labs are working toward a shared safety standards body, potentially reshaping how frontier models get built and deployed

The three companies most responsible for the current AI arms race are now trying to build the guardrails together. OpenAI, Anthropic, and [Google](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/alphabet/) DeepMind have been engaged in discussions since July 2026 to create an industry-led body for AI safety standards, bringing together rivals who collectively control the most powerful AI systems on the planet.

## What the partnership actually looks like

The collaboration centers on several concrete pillars: shared technical evaluations, pre-release audits of advanced models, independent testing frameworks, and standardized safety protocols.

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis proposed the initiative on July 14, 2026, pitching a US-led standards organization modeled after FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. FINRA is the self-regulatory body that oversees broker-dealers in the securities industry. It’s industry-funded, industry-governed, but carries real enforcement teeth.

OpenAI’s chief scientist Jakub Pachocki reinforced the direction in an essay published September 6, 2026, calling for common safety requirements that would enforce a uniform approach across the entire AI sector.

By mid-September, regular working-group meetings were already underway. The three companies have reportedly been hashing out the details of what shared evaluations would look like, how independent auditors would gain access to pre-release models, and what benchmarks would constitute a passing grade on safety.

## Who’s in, and who’s notably absent

The partnership builds on the foundation laid by the 2024 Frontier Model Forum, which included [Microsoft](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/microsoft/) alongside the current trio. That earlier initiative focused on establishing industry norms and best practices for AI development.

All three companies opted out of [Nvidia](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/nvidia/)’s Open Secure AI Alliance, which launched in July 2026 and attracted more than 30 firms focused on open-source AI security tools.

All three companies currently lead the AI Safety Index issued by the Future of Life Institute, which tracks safety practices and commitments across the industry.

## The competitive dynamics underneath the cooperation

Safety standards, once established, become barriers to entry. If OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google define what “safe” looks like for frontier AI, every competitor will need to meet those benchmarks or risk being locked out of enterprise contracts, government procurement, and public trust.

The key figures driving this effort, Dario Amodei at Anthropic, Sam Altman at OpenAI, and Demis Hassabis at Google DeepMind, have each staked significant personal and corporate credibility on the idea that safety and capability aren’t mutually exclusive.
