Classic Nvidia GPUs like the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 3080 are making a surprising comeback in 2026. Modders have managed to upgrade memory modules on the cards, doubling their capacity from 10GB to 20GB of GDDR6X, making them better suited to modern gaming and AI workloads, as VideoCardz reports.
With no new graphics cards on the horizon from either Nvidia or AMD and the prices of existing cards rising ever higher, modders have been mining the back-catalog of Nvidia products to come up with something more capable.
The RTX 3080 was a decent card in its day, but even then, it was clear that its 10GB of VRAM would limit its future performance. With 8,704 CUDA cores, it's far behind the likes of Nvidia's current-generation flagship cards, but those cost thousands more.
This older option does have a 320W TDP, which is a lot of power to draw for this level of card, and it lacks support for DLSS frame generation and multi-frame generation. However, standard DLSS upscaling is possible, and Lossless Scaling should work fine. RTX 30 cards still receive regular driver updates, too, making this card a versatile gaming option.
Buying any modified cards comes with risk, and you're unlikely to get a warranty, but if you can find it at the right price, it might be worth considering. VideoCardz claims they go for around $450 on Chinese second-hand markets. Unfortunately, on US eBay, they're much more expensive, at around $700 each, which does eat into their value. On the other hand, the RTX 5070 now edges close to $1,000.
If you want an alternative that's a bit more affordable, there are also modified RTX 2080 Tis doing the rounds with double the memory. Their performance is unlikely to be as impressive, more like an RTX 5060. But at $500-600, that's an option for those who need more than 8GB of VRAM, which is about all Nvidia is offering at that price. AMD, on the other hand, has a 16GB 9060 XT for around $450 and a 9070 GRE with 12GB for around $550, so don't think modified cards are the only way to go if you want a more affordable GPU with plenty of VRAM.
