The project runs locally via a Python server with no cloud dependencies, letting families generate dedication plaques, commemorative chronicles and heirloom recipe cards from fragmented memories without sending intimate data to commercial LLMs. The developer framed it as a response to privacy loss, platform shutdowns and unreliable internet during real-world celebrations.", "body_md": "*This is a submission for the [Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine](https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week4-2026-10-26)*\n\n## \n  \n  \n  What I Built\n\nEvery year on October 31 and November 1 and 2, the line between past and present feels a little thinner. \n\nIn Mexican and Mesoamerican tradition, families celebrate **Día de los Muertos** by building an *ofrenda*—a sacred altar illuminated with flickering beeswax candles (*veladoras*), fragrant orange marigold petals (*cempasúchil*), portraits of ancestors, and their favorite foods, drinks, and songs. The tradition is founded on a profound truth: **someone only truly dies when the living cease to remember their stories.**\n\nIn our modern digital world, family memories are more fragile than we admit. Intimate anecdotes, handwritten recipes, funny sayings, and faded photographs are scattered across abandoned group chats, decaying USB drives, and aging photo albums. \n\nWorse, when people try to archive their family history with modern cloud AI assistants, they face an unsettling trade-off:\n\n- \n**Privacy Surrender** : Feeding intimate family grief, heirloom photographs, and ancestors' words into closed commercial LLMs where the data is logged, retained, and used for future corporate model training.\n- \n**Digital Extinction** : Cloud AI startups shut down, APIs deprecate, and subscription paywalls change. If your family ofrenda lives on a closed platform, it can disappear overnight.\n- \n**The \"Candlelight & Storm\" Reality** : Real-world celebrations happen in homes, candlelit vigils, or rural towns during autumn storms where the internet drops out. A cloud-tethered AI assistant becomes a useless loading spinner.\n\nTo solve this, I built **Ofrenda AI**—an open-source, 100% offline-first digital memorial altar and oral history vault powered by **Google Gemma 2** and **ElevenLabs**.\n\nIt runs entirely on your local machine—designed to work with the lights and the internet completely off.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  Source Code and Local Quickstart\n\n- \n**GitHub Repository** :[https://github.com/Sai-Adithya-M/ofrenda-ai](https://github.com/Sai-Adithya-M/ofrenda-ai)\n- \n**Local Quickstart** : Run in seconds with`python3 server.py` (privacy-first, zero cloud dependencies required).\n- \n**Deployment** : Production-ready`render.yaml` for families who want to share their altar across cities.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  Walkthrough and Screenshots\n\n### \n  \n  \n  1. The Multi-Tiered Living Altar\n\nWhen you open Ofrenda, you are greeted by an interactive three-tiered traditional shrine with animated drifting marigold petals (*cempasúchil*), copal incense smoke, and framed ancestor portraits:\n\n- \n**Tier I (Heaven & The Spirit)** : An earthenware copal urn emitting soft purifying smoke particles.\n- \n**Tier II (The Hearth & Memory)** : Framed ancestor portraits. Clicking any portrait lights their personal candle and opens their memorial sanctuary.\n- \n**Tier III (Earth & Traditional Offerings)** : Interactive traditional tokens:  - \n*Pan de Muerto* : Sweet braided bread to nourish spirits after the long journey.\n  - \n*Calaveras de Azúcar* : Decorated sugar skulls celebrating the sweetness of life.\n  - \n*Agua Pura* : Clean spring water to quench their thirst.\n  - \n*Sal* : Purifying salt preserving the spirit along the journey.\n  - \n*Marigold Path* : The golden scent trail guiding spirits home.\n\n### \n  \n  \n  2. Remembrance Weaver & Heirloom Recipe Studio (Google Gemma 2)\n\nSelecting an ancestor opens their dedicated Memorial Sanctuary, where **Google Gemma 2** synthesizes fragmented memories into three permanent tributes:\n\n1. \n**The Dedication Plaque** : A poetic epitaph illuminated in gold that encapsulates the ancestor's life philosophy.\n2. \n**The Commemorative Chronicle** : A rich 3-paragraph oral history narrative that weaves together their favorite sayings, quirky habits, and enduring impact on the family.\n3. \n**The Heirloom Recipe Card** : A preserved culinary formula (such as*Abuelita Rosa's Pan de Muerto Tradicional* or*Don Arturo's Midnight Café de Olla* ) complete with ingredients, preparation steps, and ceremonial family ritual notes.\n\n### \n  \n  \n  3. Spoken Oral History (ElevenLabs)\n\nClicking **\"Listen to Chronicle\"** generates a spoken oral narration of the memorial:\n\n- \n**Voice Synthesis** : Narrated in a warm, reverent voice using ElevenLabs Multilingual v2 (with seamless automatic fallback to browser speech synthesis when completely offline).\n- \n**Synthesized Ambient Soundscape** : A built-in Web Audio engine synthesizes the gentle crackle of beeswax candles and acoustic Spanish guitar chords in the background without loading heavy external audio files.\n\n### \n  \n  \n  4. Eternal Memorial Capsule (Self-Contained Export)\n\nClicking **\"Eternal Capsule\"** immediately downloads a self-contained, single-file HTML document (`ofrenda_eternal_capsule.html`). \n\n- It contains zero external CSS or JavaScript dependencies, zero trackers, and zero API calls.\n- You can copy this file to an offline USB thumb drive, store it in your family archive, or print it out.\n- Fifty years from now, any web browser on any computer will open and render your family's ofrenda exactly as it looked today.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  How I Built It\n\nOfrenda AI is designed around an offline-first, local-first architecture:\n\n### \n  \n  \n  1. The Remembrance Weaver with Google Gemma 2\n\n- \n**Implementation** :`services/gemma_engine.py`\n- We use Google's open-weight Gemma 2 model (`gemma2:9b` ).\n- The engine ingests unstructured memories, favorite foods, songs, and sayings, and applies structured prompting to produce culturally authentic memorial suites in four tones: *Reverent & Sacred* ,*Celebratory & Joyful* ,*Intimate Family Lore* , and*Traditional Oral History* .\n- It natively supports local Ollama instances (`http://localhost:11434` ), HuggingFace Inference API, and a deterministic fallback engine so the application functions out of the box with zero external setup.\n\n### \n  \n  \n  2. Spoken Oral History with ElevenLabs\n\n- \n**Implementation** :`services/elevenlabs_engine.py` &`frontend/js/audio.js`\n- Spoken oral history is powered by ElevenLabs Multilingual v2 with the calm, respectful \"Adam\" narrator voice profile.\n- When working completely offline, the client seamlessly shifts to the browser's Web Speech API and layers it with a custom Web Audio API procedural soundscape (brownian-noise candle crackles and synthesized nylon-string guitar chords).\n\n### \n  \n  \n  3. Local-First Archival Storage\n\n- \n**Implementation** :`services/ofrenda_store.py` &`server.py`\n- All ancestral records, photos, and recipes are stored in human-readable JSON on the user's hard drive.\n- Running `python3 server.py` spins up a zero-dependency threaded HTTP service that serves the responsive HTML5/CSS3 frontend.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?\n\nThe Hacktoberfest prompt poses a crucial question:\n\n*\"In your post, tell us why open innovation matters for what you built. Does running your own model mean your project works with the lights (and the internet) off? Keep your family's photos and stories private and on your own machine? Make sure what you build isn't locked inside a service that might disappear someday?\"*\n\nHere is why open-source AI is not just a technical preference, but an ethical imperative for honoring the dead:\n\n**Sacred Memories Must Never Be Commercial Training Data** :\nA grandmother's handwritten bread recipe, a grandfather's parting advice, and family photographs are sacred. Uploading them to closed, proprietary cloud AI platforms means surrendering privacy. Proprietary terms of service allow providers to retain conversations and train future commercial models on your family's grief. With open-weight models like Gemma 2 running locally, your family memories never touch an external server.\n**Digital Immortality Requires Zero Platform Lock-In** :\nClosed cloud services come and go. When companies shut down or pivot, user accounts and cloud archives are erased without recourse. An ofrenda built on an open codebase and open-weight models belongs to you forever. It cannot be paywalled, deprecated, or deleted by a corporate board.\n**The \"Candlelight & Storm\" Offline Reality** :\nDía de los Muertos is celebrated with candles in living rooms, cemetery vigils, and rural communities where autumn weather frequently cuts electrical and internet grids. When the lights go out, cloud-tethered applications fail. Because Ofrenda AI runs open-weight inference locally on a laptop or Raspberry Pi, it continues to honor your ancestors with the power and internet completely off.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  Testing Instructions for Judges\n\nYou can run and test Ofrenda AI locally in under two minutes:\n\n1. \n**Clone and Run** :\n\n1. \n**Open in Browser** :\nNavigate to`http://localhost:10000` .\n2. \n**Interactive Features to Test** :  - Click between the pre-loaded ancestor portraits (*Abuelita Rosa Morales* and*Don Arturo Navarro* ) to inspect their dedication plaques, chronicles, and heirloom recipes.\n  - Click **\"Light All Candles\"** or toggle individual candles on portrait frames.\n  - Click **\"Ambient Atmosphere\"** to hear procedural candle crackle and Spanish guitar chords.\n  - Click **\"Honor a Loved One\"** to add a new ancestor with your own custom memories and watch Gemma 2 weave a personalized tribute.\n  - Click **\"Eternal Capsule\"** to download the self-contained offline HTML archive.\n\n## \n  \n  \n  Target Hackathon Tracks\n\n- \n**Best Use of Gemma ($200 Featured Category)** : Uses Google's open-weight Gemma 2 model to extract memories, weave emotional oral history chronicles, and reconstruct ancestral culinary recipes.\n- \n**Best Use of ElevenLabs ($100 Partner Category)** : Transforms written chronicles into spoken oral history with warm voice synthesis.\n- \n**Best Use of Render ($200 Featured Category)** : Zero-config cloud deployment via`render.yaml` for families celebrating across multiple cities.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2", "canonical_source": "https://dev.to/sai-adithya-m/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2-2o9j", "published_at": "2026-10-31 13:09:53+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-10-31 13:19:45.663218+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "large-language-models", "generative-ai", "ai-tools"], "entities": ["Ofrenda AI", "Google Gemma 2", "ElevenLabs", "GitHub", "Sai-Adithya-M"], "also_reported_by": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ofrenda-offline-ancestral-memory-altar-oral-history-vault-powered-by-gemma-2.jsonld"}}
