# Nvidia’s DLSS 5 launches with one game and a high cost

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 arrives on **September 3 at 9 p.m. PT**. The company’s new neural-rendering system will launch with **NBA 2K27** on RTX 50-series PCs, laptops and GeForce Now. The technology changes lighting, shadows and material detail after a game has rendered its frames, but it also carries a claimed 50–60% performance penalty and remains tied to Nvidia’s newest GPUs.

The launch follows a hostile reaction to Nvidia’s March reveal. Early demonstrations, including footage from *Resident Evil Requiem* and *Starfield*, appeared to alter characters' faces enough to trigger comparisons with AI-generated imagery. Those games still don’t support DLSS 5 at launch, and Nvidia hasn’t confirmed when—or whether—the other titles previously named for the feature will receive it.

DLSS 5 is not a conventional upscaler. It takes the completed 2D render, along with color data and motion vectors, and uses a neural model to modify how existing shapes appear. Structure controls a combination of ambient occlusion, contact shadows, reflections and subsurface scattering. Tone adjusts color and broader lighting. Developers can apply those changes to an entire scene or isolate faces, skin, clothing, foliage, food, furniture and other objects with automatic or hand-created masks. Nvidia’s Gabriele Leone said there is no limit to the number of masks or groups a developer can implement.

That granularity lets a studio leave a deliberately stylized face untouched while applying richer shadows to a uniform, necklace or nearby foliage. It also makes poor implementation easier to diagnose: aggressive settings can make a character look older, gaunter or less consistent with the game’s art direction even though the underlying geometry has not changed.

Unofficial versions tested in older games illustrate the problem. At 80% intensity, and especially at 200%, characters in *Shadow of the Tomb Raider* and *Yakuza Kiwami* can acquire deeper wrinkles, lighter hair and harsher facial shadows. At 40%, the changes are more restrained. The leaked tools also expose tone and structure independently, allowing modders to emphasize either color and lighting or definition and shadow.

Nvidia’s example is *NBA 2K27*, where the effect is less radical: player skin, jersey shadows, basketball texture and crowd characters receive additional depth rather than a visibly different identity. The result is more plausible when the input is already high quality; Nvidia says higher-resolution rendering and ray tracing give DLSS 5 more information to work with.

## Hardware requirements and the frame-rate trade-off

The hardware requirement is lower than in Nvidia’s first demonstration, but the feature is still expensive in compatibility and compute terms.

The frame-rate figures need careful interpretation. Nvidia’s RTX 5060 claim depends on **6x frame generation**, meaning the game produces one “real” frame for every six displayed frames. The headline output rate therefore says little by itself about input latency or the responsiveness of the underlying simulation.

Nvidia estimates DLSS 5 reduces performance by **50% to 60% on average** across RTX 50-series GPUs. The leaked implementation also cut performance roughly in half in *Shadow of the Tomb Raider* testing. DLSS 5 is therefore a rendering-quality option rather than a free performance upgrade: frame generation can inflate the displayed frame count, but the neural pass still consumes substantial GPU resources.

The RTX 50-series restriction further narrows the audience.
