Nvidia’s DLSS 5 launches with one game and a high cost

Nvidia's DLSS 5 launches September 3 at 9 p.m. PT with NBA 2K27 on RTX 50-series PCs, laptops, and GeForce Now, carrying a claimed 50–60% performance penalty and RTX 50-only support. The neural-rendering system modifies lighting, shadows, and material detail after frame rendering, but early demos drew criticism for altering character faces, and other previously named titles lack confirmed support.

DLSS 5 arrives September 3 with NBA 2K27, RTX 50-only support and a claimed 50–60% performance hit.

Image: The Verge Nvidia’s DLSS 5 arrives on September 3 at 9 p.m. PT. The company’s new neural-rendering system will launch with NBA 2K27 on RTX 50-series PCs, laptops and GeForce Now. The technology changes lighting, shadows and material detail after a game has rendered its frames, but it also carries a claimed 50–60% performance penalty and remains tied to Nvidia’s newest GPUs.

The launch follows a hostile reaction to Nvidia’s March reveal. Early demonstrations, including footage from Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield, appeared to alter characters' faces enough to trigger comparisons with AI-generated imagery. Those games still don’t support DLSS 5 at launch, and Nvidia hasn’t confirmed when—or whether—the other titles previously named for the feature will receive it.

DLSS 5 is not a conventional upscaler. It takes the completed 2D render, along with color data and motion vectors, and uses a neural model to modify how existing shapes appear. It can add or strengthen contact shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, subsurface scattering, color and broader lighting. It does not create a new character or object, and Nvidia says the same input should produce the same output each time.

“A fruit will stay a fruit. The same character will still be the same character.”

The system works after the game engine has produced its frame and after techniques such as DLSS Super Resolution have been applied. Nvidia says DLSS 5 can use some engine cues, but its model recognizes characters, objects, materials and foliage from the rendered image rather than receiving a complete semantic description of the scene.

Developers get control, but the controls create new failure modes #

DLSS 5 is not simply an on/off switch. At launch, developers have three models—identified in Nvidia’s briefing as Model A, Model B and Model C, and described by the leaked mod as “default,” “natural” and “cinematic”—as well as separate controls for tone and structure intensity.

Structure controls a combination of ambient occlusion, contact shadows, reflections and subsurface scattering. Tone adjusts color and broader lighting. Developers can apply those changes to an entire scene or isolate faces, skin, clothing, foliage, food, furniture and other objects with automatic or hand-created masks. Nvidia’s Gabriele Leone said there is no limit to the number of masks or groups a developer can implement.

That granularity lets a studio leave a deliberately stylized face untouched while applying richer shadows to a uniform, necklace or nearby foliage. It also makes poor implementation easier to diagnose: aggressive settings can make a character look older, gaunter or less consistent with the game’s art direction even though the underlying geometry has not changed.

Unofficial versions tested in older games illustrate the problem. At 80% intensity, and especially at 200%, characters in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Yakuza Kiwami can acquire deeper wrinkles, lighter hair and harsher facial shadows. At 40%, the changes are more restrained. The leaked tools also expose tone and structure independently, allowing modders to emphasize either color and lighting or definition and shadow.

Nvidia’s example is NBA 2K27, where the effect is less radical: player skin, jersey shadows, basketball texture and crowd characters receive additional depth rather than a visibly different identity. The result is more plausible when the input is already high quality; Nvidia says higher-resolution rendering and ray tracing give DLSS 5 more information to work with.

“DLSS 5 is a tool for developers and for artists […] to bring their vision closer to what they might have intended.”

Hardware requirements and the frame-rate trade-off #

The hardware requirement is lower than in Nvidia’s first demonstration, but the feature is still expensive in compatibility and compute terms.

Stage or configuration Hardware and conditions What was shown or claimed
March reveal Two RTX 5090 GPUs Nvidia’s original DLSS 5 demonstrations required this setup
Launch minimum example One RTX 5060 1080p, ray tracing and ultra settings in NBA 2K27, with a fast CPU, substantial RAM and 6x frame generation
Launch high-end example RTX 5090 370 fps at 4K Ultra using Performance mode, alongside ray tracing and DLSS Multi Frame Generation
Launch lower-end example RTX 5060 258 fps at 1080p High with ray tracing and DLSS Multi Frame Generation

The frame-rate figures need careful interpretation. Nvidia’s RTX 5060 claim depends on 6x frame generation, meaning the game produces one “real” frame for every six displayed frames. The headline output rate therefore says little by itself about input latency or the responsiveness of the underlying simulation.

Nvidia estimates DLSS 5 reduces performance by 50% to 60% on average across RTX 50-series GPUs. The leaked implementation also cut performance roughly in half in Shadow of the Tomb Raider testing. DLSS 5 is therefore a rendering-quality option rather than a free performance upgrade: frame generation can inflate the displayed frame count, but the neural pass still consumes substantial GPU resources.

The RTX 50-series restriction further narrows the audience. An RTX 5060 was described as retailing for around $470, while owners of older Nvidia cards, AMD GPUs and consoles cannot use the official feature. Modders have reportedly injected DLSS 5 into older OpenGL and DirectX 9 games, and it can technically process video captured from a Nintendo Switch 2, but those experiments are not equivalent to official game support.

One supported game and an unproven rollout #

For US players, the question is whether studios will spend development time tuning masks, models and intensity levels for a feature that works only on RTX 50-series hardware and can consume half the rendering budget. Nvidia previously said DLSS 5 would reach at least 16 games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Resident Evil Requiem. At launch, however, NBA 2K27 is the only confirmed supported title in the supplied reporting. Nvidia did not provide a schedule for the other games or reconfirm that they are still planned.

The controls address the biggest criticism of the March demos: developers can keep faces out of the processing path. They also shift responsibility for visual quality to each studio’s implementation. DLSS 5 goes live September 3 with one game, a large compute cost and no independent evidence yet that its subtle improvements justify the hardware and latency trade-offs.
