According to Euronews, the backlash actually started back in March 2026, when an early reveal of DLSS 5 turned into what the outlet called a "meme storm" over flattened art direction and uncanny faces. The loudest flashpoint was Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem. Nvidia's demo gave FBI agent Grace Ashcroft sharper cheekbones, different eyes and noticeably plumper lips, an Instagram-ready glow-up that fans instantly branded "yassified." TechRadar reported that the game's producer later shrugged off the reaction, arguing the outrage over Grace's makeover actually proved Capcom "got the design right," since it showed how attached players already were to her original look.
Nvidia's CEO did not shrug it off. At GTC 2026, Jensen Huang addressed the criticism head-on, telling the room, as Tom's Hardware reported: "Well, first of all, they're completely wrong." Huang argued developers keep full creative control over the tool, and that DLSS 5 only layers photoreal lighting and materials on top of a game's existing art, not a redesign of it.

Then the tool escaped Nvidia's control entirely.
Modders extracted the DLSS 5 files and dropped them into games Nvidia never built the system for, and the results were rougher than anything in Nvidia's own demos. Community tests through September turned up sunburned faces, flickering geometry and, in one widely shared clip from Grand Theft Auto V, a frame that dissolved into what players called a hallucination. A developer using the handle jpneagle built a real-time webcam filter around leaked DLSS 5 files and posted it to GitHub, letting anyone run the same photorealistic treatment over their own face through OBS. Kotaku reported a second creator, Samuel Cardillo, doing the same thing on a livestream. Nvidia built this technology to touch fictional characters. Watching it get pointed at a real, live human face instead, with results ranging from underwhelming to unsettling, is what pushed a gaming controversy into deepfake territory.
Not everyone is convinced by the panic #
Not everyone agrees the panic is warranted.
Notebookcheck's own hands-on testing, published after weeks of meme-driven outrage, argued the "AI slop" narrative has been overblown once DLSS 5 runs the way it was designed, inside a supported title with proper masking, rather than through a modder's hack. That's a real distinction. But it leaves Nvidia defending two different products at once: the polished version it ships with a developer's buy-in, and the unsanctioned version spreading everywhere else with Nvidia's name attached to both.
DLSS 5 still runs only on RTX 50 series hardware. Nvidia has said RTX 40 series support arrives later this fall, which means millions of gamers who bought last generation's flagship cards are watching the entire fight from the sidelines, unable to even load the feature everyone online is arguing about.
Frankly, that exclusivity buys Nvidia time it may need. But it also means the company's biggest AI showcase in gaming is currently being judged largely by people who can't run it, off the back of leaked mods Nvidia never approved and, for now, can't fully control.
