*Nvidia's DLSS 5 arrives on September 3 with NBA 2K27, and the catch is simple: the official version belongs to RTX 50 buyers and GeForce NOW users first.*

DLSS 5 goes live at 9 p.m. Pacific on September 3 inside NBA 2K27, according to Nvidia's own launch post. The company says the feature will run on GeForce RTX 50 series desktop and laptop GPUs, and on GeForce NOW Ultimate rigs using RTX 5080-class hardware in the cloud. It won't officially come to RTX 40, RTX 30, or older cards at launch. If you bought an RTX 4090 for $1,599 at the last cycle's high end, that's the part that stings.

Nvidia calls the new piece 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It isn't just another sharper upscale. The system takes color and motion data from the rendered frame, then uses a neural model to add lighting, skin detail, hair response, contact shadows, and material effects while trying to keep the original shapes intact. That sounds technical because it is. The simple version is harsher: DLSS 5 changes how the image looks, not only how fast it gets to your monitor.

Jensen Huang doesn't do modest announcements. At GTC 2026 in March, he sold DLSS 5 in the biggest possible terms: "Twenty-five years after NVIDIA invented the programmable shader, we are reinventing computer graphics once again," the Nvidia CEO said in the company's release. He called it "the GPT moment for graphics." That's exactly the kind of line that makes gamers nervous. People already know what generative AI can do to faces. They don't always like it.

## The Hardware Catch

Nvidia has tried to show that DLSS 5 no longer needs the absurd demo setup from March, when the early version ran across two RTX 5090 cards. The numbers back it up, mostly. In its September launch numbers, the company says an RTX 5090 can reach up to 370 frames per second at 4K with Ultra settings, ray tracing, DLSS 5, and Multi Frame Generation in NBA 2K27. Nvidia also published 1440p figures for the RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. That's more than March gave us. So the old draft's claim that Nvidia had only shown 4K results for the 5090 and 5080 doesn't hold.

Wired reports President Trump called Jensen Huang during an Nvidia all-hands meeting, underscoring how much of the company's China chip policy now runs through a personal relationship rather than formal channels. There is still a bill. The Verge reported that Nvidia estimates DLSS 5 carries a 50% to 60% performance hit before frame generation helps dress the number back up. That's not a footnote. If your screen says 260 frames per second but the game is using 6x frame generation, you need to remember how little of that is a traditionally rendered frame. High frame counters can hide a lot.

Price makes the feature feel narrower than Nvidia's marketing does. Nvidia launched the RTX 5090 at $1,999, the RTX 5080 at $999, the RTX 5070 Ti at $749, and the RTX 5070 at $549 in January 2025. Tom's Hardware's late-summer 2026 price watch put the best U.S. price for the RTX 5090 at about $4,288, with the RTX 5080 around $1,256 and the RTX 5070 around $629. TrackaLacker's live listings show the spread can get much uglier, especially on 5090 cards and bundles. The real entry price for DLSS 5 is not NBA 2K27. It's the hardware stack underneath it.

## The Backlash Has A Point

This isn't the first time Nvidia has held a headline graphics feature for its newest cards. DLSS 4's Multi Frame Generation arrived with the RTX 50 series in early 2025, and RTX 40 owners had to watch the best marketing line move past them. DLSS 5 repeats that pattern, only with a more sensitive feature. Faster frames are one thing. AI-altered faces are another.

Gamers noticed immediately. Video Games Chronicle reported in March that Nvidia's DLSS 5 reveal trailer had only about 16% positive ratings on YouTube, with roughly 82,500 dislikes against 16,100 likes at the time it checked. Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia later criticized the way the feature changed Resident Evil Requiem's Grace Ashcroft, saying the character looked like a different person once DLSS 5 was applied. Frankly, that's the real problem. A lighting tool that changes a character's face has crossed into art direction, whether Nvidia likes that framing or not.

Huang pushed back hard. At a GTC press Q&A covered by Tom's Hardware, he said critics were "completely wrong" and argued that DLSS 5 keeps developer control over geometry and textures - plus the generative AI effects layered on top. Nvidia has also stressed that developers get sliders for structure and tone, plus masking, so a studio can apply the effect to skin, foliage, food, furniture, or almost nothing at all. That helps. It doesn't end the argument.

Modders have already made the official hardware line look less clean. Tom's Hardware verified that an RTX Remix modder known as Uncle Burrito patched leaked DLSS 5 files to work on RTX 4000 series cards, including an RTX 4080. Separate Ampere tests on RTX 30 cards were far rougher, with Tom's Hardware reporting single-digit frame rates in some cases and roughly 30 to 40 frames per second on a high-end RTX 3080 Ti in select titles after heavy compromises. The hardware can try. Official support is still Nvidia's choice.

AMD is taking a different route, though not a fully open one. AMD's current FSR Upscaling 4.1 is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series cards, while AMD says RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. The older FSR 2 and FSR 3 paths remain much broader across vendors, but the newest machine-learning version has its own hardware limits. Don't pretend this is only an Nvidia habit. Nvidia is just better at turning the lock into a sales pitch.

Nvidia's fiscal second-quarter revenue more than doubled to $96.2 billion, beating every Wall Street estimate and topping guidance, yet the stock slipped anyway. Analysts at Seaport Research Partners and Mizuho are split on why a record quarter no longer moves the stock, with the China H20 restart adding another wrinkle. - [why nvidia stock didnt rally after earnings](https://startupfortune.com/nvidia-doubled-its-revenue-to-96-billion-and-wall-street-shrugged-anyway/) - [nvidia doubled revenue to 96 billion dollars](https://startupfortune.com/nvidia-doubled-its-revenue-to-96-billion-and-wall-street-shrugged-anyway/)

For now, DLSS 5 is current, real, and narrow. If you own an RTX 50 card, NBA 2K27 becomes the first proper test of whether Nvidia's neural rendering looks like better lighting or an AI pass over someone else's art. If you don't, you're watching from the outside again.
