Nvidia Pushes RTX Video Upscaling Into ComfyUI's Open-Source Pipeline

Developer Alexis Rolland merged pull request #42 into Comfy-Org's Nvidia_RTX_Nodes_ComfyUI repository on October 7, exposing every quality mode in Nvidia's RTX Video Super Resolution SDK inside ComfyUI nodes at no charge. The update adds RTX Video Frame Generation and RTX TrueHDR, runs on Tensor Cores in RTX 30, 40, and 50 series cards, and Nvidia says the upscaling path is up to 30 times faster than popular local upscalers at a fraction of the VRAM cost. The patch follows Nvidia's March integration at the Game Developers Conference, which covered the core upscaler plus NVFP4 and FP8 model support that Nvidia says delivers up to 2.5 times faster inference and cuts VRAM use by as much as 60% on RTX 50 series cards.

A single GitHub pull request quietly gave ComfyUI users the full feature set of Nvidia's RTX Video Super Resolution SDK. Nvidia isn't charging for any of it.

On October 7, developer Alexis Rolland merged pull request #42 into Comfy-Org's Nvidia_RTX_Nodes_ComfyUI repository on GitHub, and it's a bigger update than the version number suggests. The patch exposes every quality mode in Nvidia's RTX Video Super Resolution SDK directly inside ComfyUI nodes. There's BICUBIC for plain interpolation, four tiers of AI upscaling for compressed footage, dedicated DENOISE and DEBLUR presets, HIGHBITRATE modes for already-clean sources, and STREAMING_MEDIUM and STREAMING_ULTRA settings built for webcam and broadcast feeds. The same PR adds two capabilities ComfyUI didn't have before: RTX Video Frame Generation, which interpolates extra frames to multiply frame rate, and RTX TrueHDR, which converts standard dynamic range footage into BT.2020 PQ or HLG HDR.

None of this requires a render farm. It runs on the Tensor Cores already sitting inside any RTX 30, 40, or 50 series card - the same hardware gamers use for ray tracing. Nvidia has said the upscaling path runs up to 30 times faster than popular local upscalers, and at a fraction of the VRAM cost. That gap is wide enough that a clip which used to take minutes to push to 4K now finishes in a fraction of that time, on a consumer desktop.

ComfyUI is the node-based interface that has become the default way serious AI artists and developers chain together image and video generation models like Flux and LTX-Video. It lets you wire raw model outputs into custom pipelines instead of accepting whatever a closed app gives you. Nvidia first brought RTX acceleration into that tool back in March: it unveiled the integration at the Game Developers Conference alongside Comfy-Org, as part of its RTX AI Garage initiative, according to Nvidia's own blog. That rollout covered the core upscaler and NVFP4 and FP8 model support, which Nvidia says delivers up to 2.5 times faster inference and cuts VRAM use by as much as 60% on RTX 50 series cards.

What's new this month is depth, not reach. The October 7 update's workflow diagrams show a GetVideoComponents node pulling images, audio, and frame rate out of a source clip. It hands the audio straight to a CreateVideo node on the output side, so a creator's upscaling pass no longer strips the soundtrack. Pair that with H.264 and HEVC NVENC hardware encoding, and the pipeline now goes from raw generated frames to a finished, audio-intact video file without leaving the GPU.

That's a small detail. It's also exactly the kind of friction that used to send people to a separate video editor just to reattach sound after an upscale pass.

The strategy underneath the feature list #

Nvidia doesn't need to win video upscaling as a standalone product. It needs every AI creator's workflow to assume an RTX card is the fastest way to run it, and giving away Python packages and ComfyUI nodes for free is a cheaper way to cement that than any ad campaign. The company has published a Python Wheel on PyPI and sample code on GitHub for developers who want RTX Video capability outside ComfyUI entirely. That signals the same upscaling tech is meant to show up inside other creative tools over time, not just one node pack.

It's a familiar playbook dressed in new clothes. Nvidia spent the 2010s getting game engines to assume CUDA was the default compute layer; now it's getting the generative video stack to assume RTX Tensor Cores are the default upscaling layer. The difference is that this time the audience isn't studio engineers. It's anyone running a $1,500 gaming PC who downloaded ComfyUI to play with open video models.

You don't have to be a professional colorist to feel the gap this closes. A hobbyist generating clips with an open LTX-Video or Wan model locally has always had a rough final step: the raw output looks soft, the motion stutters, and cleaning it up meant either a slow CPU-bound upscaler or a paid cloud service. Nvidia's bet is simple. If the fix lives inside the same ComfyUI canvas where the video was generated, free and fast enough to feel instant, creators stop looking elsewhere. And every one of those canvases becomes one more reason to buy an RTX card instead of a competitor's GPU.
