Nvidia just made its cheapest path into robotics AI significantly more powerful. The company has released the Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit, an upgraded version of its entry-level edge computing platform that pushes AI performance from 40 TOPS to 67 TOPS, all while keeping the price at $249.
That 1.7x performance jump is the kind of upgrade that usually comes with a new product generation and a higher price tag. Instead, Nvidia managed to squeeze it out of the same hardware platform, meaning existing Orin Nano owners can unlock the boost through a JetPack software update. No new silicon required.
What the Jetson Orin Nano Super actually does #
The original Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit debuted at GTC 2023 with up to 40 TOPS of performance. TOPS stands for Tera Operations Per Second, which measures how many trillions of basic math operations a chip can crunch every second. At 67 TOPS, the Super variant enters territory where it can actually handle the transformer-based AI models that have reshaped the industry over the past two years.
The Jetson Orin Nano Super is specifically optimized for transformer architectures, the same family of models behind large language models, vision-language models, and vision transformers. In practical terms, that means a small robotics platform can now run sophisticated AI for visual recognition, natural language understanding, and multimodal reasoning without needing a connection to cloud infrastructure.
Nvidia is positioning the kit for use across manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. The energy efficiency of the platform makes it viable for mobile robots and embedded systems where power consumption matters as much as raw performance.
A $249 entry point changes the math #
Nvidia has described the Jetson Orin Nano Super as the most affordable generative AI supercomputer for edge devices. Robotics engineers at startups can prototype AI-powered devices without a massive hardware budget. University labs can equip students with capable development platforms at a fraction of what professional-grade AI hardware typically costs.
The JetPack software upgrade path is arguably just as important as the price. Developers who already invested in the original Orin Nano platform don’t have to buy new hardware to access Super-level performance.
