Nvidia Chip Guided the Russian AI Drone That Killed Three Ukrainians A Russian Molniya attack drone equipped with an Nvidia Jetson Orin computer module killed three civilians at a gas station in Zaporizhzhia on July 6, 2026, according to Ukrainian air defense commanders and forensic teams who told The New York Times the drone flew without a human pilot and selected its own target using onboard software trained to recognize propane tanks. The unencrypted module allowed investigators to read the targeting code, marking the first documented death from a Russian self-targeting drone, per a CSIS analyst. Col. When I wrote up Ukrainian intelligence’s teardown of the Russian V2U drone in June 2025, the Jetson Orin inside it was a warning about where this was heading. Fourteen months later it is a cause of death, and according to a CSIS analyst who tracks this program, the first documented one from a Russian self-targeting drone. Investigators Read the Targeting Code Off an Unencrypted Jetson Orin Wreckage from the July 6 strike and other Molniya attacks on Zaporizhzhia contained Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputers and no radio antennas. The module was not encrypted. Ukrainian officials said they could read the terrain imagery loaded for navigation and the code that told the drone which objects to attack. That detail separates this case from every earlier Jetson sighting. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence agency HUR has been cataloguing the module in Russian weapons https://war-sanctions.gur.gov.ua/en/components/7196 for over a year, but a chip on a board proves only that the hardware was there. Readable code showing a propane-tank classifier is proof of what the hardware was doing. A missing antenna alone would not settle the question, since a drone can fly preprogrammed coordinates on decades-old autopilot logic. That drone would have no use for a Jetson. Vadym Kushnikov of the Kharkiv Aviation Institute described the weapon as a preprogrammed tool trained in simulation to hunt specific objects. Col. The Same Nvidia Module Keeps Turning Up in Russian Weapons The Jetson Orin in the Zaporizhzhia Molniya is the fourth Russian weapon family Ukrainian investigators have tied to the same Nvidia board. The V2U attack drone, the Shahed MS001 variant, and the S-71M Monochrome cruise missile all carried one before the Molniya did, according to Ukrainian military and intelligence reporting. A board built in Nvidia’s supply chain last spring was inside a Russian missile by this summer. The Molniya’s turn came in early July. Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, the radio specialist advising Ukraine’s defense minister, reported on July 3 https://united24media.com/defense-tech/russias-cheap-molniya-drone-is-learning-to-strike-without-being-steered-20419 that a Molniya had struck a Ukrainian facility carrying only a camera and an onboard computer, with no control antenna at all. “The enemy is using the V2U platform to train its neural network,” he wrote. Three days later the gas station strike killed three people. The Times reporting confirms that Russia began test flights of AI-guided Molniyas in May and had been testing self-targeting on the V2U for several months before that, with some V2U flights limited to last-mile targeting after a human picked the objective. The Molniya is the cheap, mass-produced fixed-wing model, which is what makes this different from a boutique missile. Russia is putting the autonomy on the airframe it builds in volume. Western silicon in Russian weapons is not news on its own. The Jetson is a different category of part. It is not a navigation chip that helps a missile find coordinates. It is the thing that decides. Nvidia Says the Board Was Never Sold in Russia Nvidia confirmed to the Times that the photographed module was a Jetson Orin. The company called it a consumer-grade product sold to students and developers, said it does not sell the board in Russia, and noted the hardware is widely available through resellers. The modules cost a few hundred dollars. Every word of that is accurate, which is the problem. The board itself is not on the export control list, so a distributor selling it to a reseller in a third country is breaking no rule. That is the gap HUR has been documenting since the V2U, one part number at a time. Ukraine Is Testing Fully Autonomous Strikes Too Mykhailo Fedorov, removed as Ukraine’s defense minister on July 15, told the Times in late July that Ukraine flew an entirely autonomous AI system against fuel storage and military equipment in occupied Crimea over several months. He said no civilians were killed. Both sides had already fielded last-mile AI, where a human picks the target and the drone finishes the approach. Russia, on the current evidence, is running its tests over a city of civilians. Zaporizhzhia’s answers are physical. Gas stations prop plastic sheeting at odd angles around their propane tanks to confuse image classifiers. The most sophisticated weapon in the story is being fought with tarps. Nine days from now, on September 2, the FCC closes comments on PS Docket 26-189, its proposal to bar foreign drones from the US market on national security grounds. DJI camera drones are the target. This month alone, Ukrainian intelligence published another US-made Nvidia module recovered from a Russian missile, and The New York Times documented one choosing a target and killing three people. The American policy response to that is a company statement about resellers. The strongest counterpoint is real: the Jetson is a generic developer board, and putting it on the export control list would land on university labs and every American drone startup building on it, while Russia’s procurement network would route around the rule the way it has routed around every other one HUR has documented. I am not arguing for that rule. I am arguing that the security logic in Washington is running backwards. The threat model that justifies banning a Chinese camera drone is speculative: data that might be collected, firmware that might be updated. The threat model in Zaporizhzhia is a photograph of a scorched American board with a part number on it. If “national security” means anything in the drone debate, the second case deserves at least as much attention as the first, and it is getting a fraction of it. My read is that the DJI fight is about market share and the Jetson fight has no domestic constituency, which is exactly why one gets a docket and the other gets a shrug. There is one thing I do not know and want to. The Times says the Zaporizhzhia module’s code was readable, which is why investigators could name the target class. HUR’s S-71M entry, by contrast, says only that the module “may indicate” AI use, and the agency has not published what that missile’s board was running. Whether the Monochrome is a true self-targeting weapon or a Jetson bolted to a coordinate-following missile is still an open question, and it matters for how many of these systems Russia actually has.
