The impromptu phone call preceded Trump's Truth Social post praising Nvidia's $96.2B quarterly revenue and a nearly 10% stock surge
Jensen Huang was in the middle of a meeting when the phone rang. On the other end: the President of the United States, calling to chat about what would soon become the talk of Wall Street. Hours later, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to publicly congratulate Nvidia on its most recent earnings report.
Nvidia’s second quarter of fiscal year 2027 delivered $96.22 billion in revenue, a 106% increase compared to the same period a year earlier, powered almost entirely by insatiable demand for AI infrastructure.
The numbers behind the call #
The data center segment posted $89.0 billion in revenue for the quarter, a 117% year-over-year jump, accounting for the vast majority of the company’s total sales.
GAAP net income hit $59.69 billion.
Looking ahead, Nvidia guided for $108 billion in revenue for Q3, plus or minus 2%. The company also signaled roughly 70% revenue growth for the full fiscal year 2028.
Nvidia shares climbed nearly 9-10% on August 27, 2026, the day after the earnings release.
Trump, Huang, and the politics of chips #
Trump’s congratulatory Truth Social post landed late on August 27 or August 28, depending on your time zone, just hours after his call interrupted Huang’s meeting. The post highlighted Nvidia’s sales figures and forward guidance.
Huang and Trump have maintained a well-documented line of communication throughout 2025 and 2026, with conversations spanning AI policy, domestic manufacturing ambitions, and chip exports to China. The company has previously designed China-specific chips to comply with restrictions, only to see those products face additional limitations as regulations tightened.
