A week later it has had five releases, from 0.1.0 to 0.5.0, and it's a good moment to look at what changed, and where it's heading. If you're already running it, `nightdrive update` brings all of this in; the [changelog](../../changelog/) has every detail.\n\n## Claude Code, part of the desktop\n\nNightdrive has been built with Claude Code from the start, so it felt right to give it a proper place on the desktop. The top bar's Claude menu now lists your Claude Code sessions: what each one is working on, whether it's busy or waiting, and a click takes you to its window. When a session finishes or needs you while you're elsewhere, a red dot appears on the icon.\n\nIts notifications say which session it is and what it wants, and when it asks for permission, you can answer Allow or Deny right in the notification. With a few sessions running side by side, that's the difference between a pile of \"Claude is waiting\" messages and knowing exactly where to look.\n\nAnd when a program crashes, Nightdrive can offer to ask Claude why (Settings › Notifications, off by default).\n\n## A calmer look\n\nEvery menu in the top bar now speaks the same language: the same round buttons, section titles and switches, and no dividers. The battery is drawn as a battery, the AirPods' pods and case too. It's the kind of change you might not notice at first, and that's the point.\n\n**Theme Editor** (launcher › Settings › Theme) lets you shape the look live: the window background and how see-through it is, the borders of active and inactive windows, the shadow and the theme colour. Save what you make as a theme of your own. The default look got a refresh along the way: no borders on inactive windows, and a wide, soft shadow.\n\n## A second screen that behaves\n\nAn external display now works the way it should: workspaces 1–9 live on the big screen, the laptop has one of its own (⌘0), and with the lid closed only the external display is used. Tell Nightdrive which side the laptop sits on, and the pointer crosses where the screens really meet. Menus opened from the keyboard come up on the screen you're on.\n\n## Sound, and what's listening\n\n- **Your headphones' microphone:** Bluetooth headphones can now be used for calls. Pick their microphone in the Sound menu, or choose Use for › Calls in the Headphones menu, and Music switches back to the best quality.\n- **Microphone and camera in use:** their icons appear in the top bar while an app is recording, and a click shows which app it is.\n- **A safer headphone jack:** when something is plugged in, Nightdrive asks whether it's headphones or speakers, and keeps the volume low until you answer.\n\n## And more\n\nNightdrive met its first real PC in 0.2.0: an Intel machine with an NVIDIA card and Secure Boot. You can choose your terminal (Ghostty, Alacritty, foot or kitty), ⌘⇧U opens the window you just closed, Ferry sends to the device you pick, clipboard screenshots have a Save button, the battery warns you at 10 % and 5 %, and dictation got sharper.\n\n## A few words from me\n\nHonestly, I haven't been this excited about computers in a long time. The hardest part of this first week has been holding back: new ideas keep coming, and with Claude a new feature can be working by the evening. What I'd love more of is other hands, people to test, and people to think along with, so that Nightdrive becomes theirs too.\n\nFor me, Nightdrive has already replaced macOS. My MacBook Pro works fully with Fedora Asahi Remix; the only thing I sometimes miss is Touch ID, and it doesn't stop me. Apple Silicon support keeps moving forward, and I can't wait to see it reach more Macs. In the meantime I'm looking at a Dell XPS 16, to see what Nightdrive is like on hardware that Linux supports all the way.\n\nThat's also where Nightdrive is going next:\n\n- **PCs are the priority.** The first steps are done; there's more to come.\n- **An ISO image** is coming soon, so Nightdrive installs in one step instead of on top of Fedora.\n- **A bigger Ferry release.**[Ferry](../../plugins/ferry/) is a mailbox between your computers and your phone: leave a photo, a file, a link or your clipboard at one end, and pick it up at the other. It goes over your own Tailscale network, so it works from anywhere, and today the phone needs nothing but its browser. Next come apps for iPhone and Mac, and support for other Linux distributions too. If you live between Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android like many of us do, Ferry is for you. More about it in the coming weeks.\n\nNightdrive won't be for everyone, but I'd like it to be for as many people as possible. If you try it, I'd love to hear how it goes, and if something stops you from switching, I'd love to hear that even more.
