Like everywhere else - Nexus Mods are being hit by a lot of AI generation, so they've changed some rules to get a bit stricter on it but they're not banning it. *If you missed it - game store [itch.io also had some issues lately too](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/11/game-store-itch-io-is-getting-flooded-with-ai-slop/).*

In a fresh [announcement](https://www.nexusmods.com/news/15654) the owners said there's been a lot of discussion on AI in the community, with many legitimate concerns - leading to many discussions with mod authors on how to proceed. Now, they've come up with a plan to help the AI adjustment era. They said the basic premise of any changes is that they are "pro-human creativity".

Why no outright ban? Well, that's quite difficult given AI being put into everything now. As they said: "We won't introduce an outright ban on AI-generated mods. You may ask me why, since that is not the solution some of you were looking for. The answer is simple: AI is currently used throughout the whole process of creation, from script autocompletion to generation of textures, voices, and full assets, and it is difficult to draw a clear boundary between what is acceptable and unacceptable. An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use. We'd prefer the opposite; it should be out in the open, clearly labelled, and regulated according to the rules that we can implement on our platform".

Below are the main highlights of what's going down.

- Nexus Mods isn't banning AI-generated mods, but it's bringing in stricter rules around how they're shared.
- New mod uploads must disclose AI use. AI-assisted mods also need a public explanation of how and where it was used, and AI tags will be easier to spot.
- Existing mods have until 2 January 2027 to meet the new requirements. Authors who keep ignoring staff requests to fix things could face restrictions or removal.
- New permission options are planned for AI use, AI training, forks and derivative mods. These will default to "Ask me", while existing permissions won’t be reset.
- Nexus says it won’t use your mods to train AI, or sell or license them to anyone doing that.
- Better controls for hiding AI content are coming. Nexus is also testing limits on how many mods one author can have in Recently Added, plus tighter upload restrictions for new accounts.
- There's no blanket ban on AI thumbnails, but misleading images, including AI images passed off as gameplay screenshots, are against the rules.
- Donation Points rules aren’t changing for now. Mods tagged as AI-generated received 2.13% of all points this year, and Nexus will keep monitoring that.
- Nexus is investing in security tools and specialist staff to help catch malicious mods.
- The changes will arrive in stages, starting with clearer AI disclosure and more visible tags. Permissions and discovery improvements will follow.

What are your thoughts on the changes?
