NexDB: Structure. Optimize. Enhance. "An AI-Powered Way to See and Improve Your Database" An intern team developed NexDB, a web-based tool that visualizes PostgreSQL databases on an interactive canvas, uses AI to suggest optimizations, and includes a built-in query editor. The tool aims to help developers, especially in Cameroon and Africa, manage databases without dedicated specialists. At some point, almost every development team ends up with a database that has become harder to manage than expected. Tables get added, relationships change, indexes accumulate, and eventually the database becomes slow, complicated, and difficult to understand. When that happens, figuring out what's wrong can take hours. You might have to dig through queries, inspect the schema manually, or rely on the one person on the team who knows how everything fits together. During our internship, my team and I wanted to build something that could make that process easier. We wanted to create a tool that would be useful not only for us, but also for developers and students in Cameroon and across Africa, where small teams often have to build and maintain systems without a dedicated database specialist. That's how NexDB started. The Problem Most developers don't really get to see their database. They see tables and SQL files, but understanding how everything connects usually means piecing it together in their heads. This becomes especially difficult when you're working under a deadline. There isn't always enough time to stop and check whether the database has: Redundant or missing indexes Poorly structured relationships between tables Queries that become slower as the amount of data grows A schema that's difficult to understand or maintain Having someone who specializes in database performance can make a huge difference, but DBAs and performance engineers aren't always available, especially for small startups, student projects, and lean development teams. As a result, problems can remain hidden until the application starts slowing down or something eventually breaks in production. The Solution That's what we wanted NexDB to help with. NexDB is a web based tool that lets you import an existing database and understand what's happening inside it. Once your database is connected, NexDB can: Visualize your database on an interactive canvas, showing tables, columns, and relationships so you can see how everything fits together. Analyze the database with AI and suggest possible improvements, making it easier to spot issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Let you run queries directly inside the app, so you don't have to keep switching between different tools. The idea is simple: instead of jumping between a database client, schema diagrams, SQL editors, and optimization tools, NexDB brings these things together in one place. Core Features 🔌 Database Import You can connect or import an existing PostgreSQL database into NexDB without manually recreating the schema. NexDB reads the database structure and uses that information to build the visualization automatically. 🎨 Interactive Database Canvas Once the database is imported, NexDB turns the schema into an interactive canvas. You can see your tables, columns, and relationships and get a much clearer picture of how the database is organized. Instead of staring at a long schema file and trying to imagine the relationships, you can simply look at them. 🤖 AI-Assisted Optimization NexDB also uses AI to analyze the database and suggest areas that could be improved. The goal is to help developers catch things such as missing indexes, unnecessary relationships, or other structural issues before they become bigger problems. The AI isn't meant to replace a database expert. It's there to give developers another useful perspective and help them find things they might have missed. 🧑💻 Built-In Query Editor We integrated Monaco Editor, the same editor that powers VS Code, directly into NexDB. This gives users a proper SQL editing experience with features like syntax highlighting while allowing them to run queries without leaving the application. Technologies We Used We chose technologies that would let us build quickly while keeping the application reliable and easy to work with. React.js — Frontend: Used to build the interface and interactive database canvas. Monaco Editor: Embedded into the frontend to provide the SQL editing experience. Fast API — Backend: Handles database connections, schema inspection, query execution, and communication with the AI layer. PostgreSQL: Our first supported database engine. Its system catalogs and information schema provide the metadata we need to understand and visualize the database structure. How We Built It When a database is imported, the Fast API backend connects to PostgreSQL and reads its schema. We collect information such as tables, columns, data types, primary keys, foreign keys, and constraints directly from PostgreSQL. The schema information is then converted into a graph. Tables become nodes, while relationships between tables become connections between those nodes. The React frontend takes this information and displays it on an interactive canvas, giving users a visual overview of the entire database. The Monaco Editor on the frontend sends SQL queries to the Fast API backend. The backend executes those queries against the connected PostgreSQL database and sends the results back to the interface. This means users can inspect and work with their data without having to leave NexDB. The backend also sends relevant database information to our AI layer. The AI looks for potential structural and performance issues and turns its findings into suggestions that users can review in the application. The whole idea is to create a simple workflow: Import → Visualize → Query → Optimize Everything happens in one place. What's Next? NexDB is still a v1. It started as an internship project, so there is plenty we want to improve. Some of the things we'd like to work on next include: Supporting database engines other than PostgreSQL Making the AI recommendations more useful and detailed Adding index recommendations and query rewriting Providing schema migration suggestions Adding collaboration features so teams can work together on the canvas Improving support for offline and low-bandwidth environments Try It Out You can check out NexDB here: nex-db-2loa.vercel.app Building NexDB during our internship taught us a lot. We learned about databases, AI integration, frontend and backend development, but also about what it actually takes to turn an idea into something people can use. If you're a student, developer, startup team, or simply someone who's spent too much time trying to understand a complicated database, we'd love for you to give Nex And if you find something that could be better, let us know. Feedback, issues, and contributions are always welcome. 🚀 Built during our internship program.
