New ChatGPT is world’s first human-level AI, says Nvidia boss

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that OpenAI's GPT-6 model, ChatGPT Astra, marks the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI), calling it the world's first human-level AI. OpenAI president Greg Brockman echoed the sentiment, saying 'welcome to the AGI era,' while CEO Sam Altman dismissed AGI as 'an irrelevant marketing term.' The claim has drawn skepticism from some industry figures, who view it as a marketing stunt ahead of a potential IPO.

Long-awaited era of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is finally here, Jensen Huang says, though OpenAI boss says it’s just ‘marketing’

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has claimed that the latest version of ChatGPT marks the first instance of artificial general intelligence (AGI), or human-level AI.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 model, known as ChatGPT Astra, launched last week with impressive results in benchmark tests that appeared to set it apart from its rivals like Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini.

OpenAI said it was “state-of-the-art on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cyber security, science and professional work”, capable of autonomously completing multiple tasks at once.

In a demonstration, the new AI model handled user requests while simultaneously performing complex tasks like creating a video game or preparing a legal document.

Following its unveiling, Mr Huang wrote in a post to X: “AGI has arrived. Congratulations OpenAI team.”

The exact definition of AGI is contested among industry figures, though according to OpenAI’s charter it involves “highly autonomous systems that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work”.

In a press call to unveil the latest version of ChatGPT, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said “welcome to the AGI era”, describing the new model as a “generational leap in capability”.

He added: “If we fast forward a couple years, and we look back and say when was it really that AGI was created, I think it’s going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model.”

His claims came just days after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that AGI was “at best... a very poorly defined term”.

Speaking on the Sources podcast, he said: “I was going to say it’s like an irrelevant marketing term.”

In independent benchmark tests that aim to measure how close an AI model is to AGI, ChatGPT Astra set new high scores that closely matched human scores.

Greg Kamradt, from the ARC Prize Foundation that develops the tests, described it as a “meaningful step change in frontier-model performance”.

Despite this, some industry figures remain sceptical of labeling any current AI models as human-level.

In response to Mr Huang’s comments, tech consultant Marko Tasic disputed his claims, describing it as a marketing stunt ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO).

“No, it’s not AGI,” he said. “This is just PR before IPO. Pump and dump, nothing more.”
