NCM: Parallel Coarse-to-Fine Text Generation Stanford researchers Hermann Kumbong, Ishan S. Khare, Simran Arora, Azalia Mirhoseini and Christopher Ré introduced Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a non-autoregressive language modeling framework that generates text coarse-to-fine by predicting all codes within each hierarchy level in parallel. Across unconditional generation, translation, summarization and Sudoku reasoning, NCM matched or beat strong diffusion language model baselines while generating text 10–31× faster and training on 4–5× fewer tokens, the authors report. NCM trains a multiscale tokenizer with per-level codebooks and nested dropout in Stage 1, then freezes it and trains a transformer in a single forward pass to predict each level from cumulative reconstructions of earlier levels.
