# National Grid invests in power generation for Microsoft amid US data center boom

The UK's main grid operator is pouring capital into energy infrastructure to keep up with Microsoft's insatiable appetite for data center power

National Grid is investing in power generation capabilities to support Microsoft’s rapidly expanding data center footprint.

## The numbers behind the power grab

National Grid Partners, the investment arm of the UK grid giant, committed $100M in March 2025 to fund AI startups focused on energy infrastructure and grid modernization. The investment is specifically aimed at addressing the challenges that come with powering data center loads.

Microsoft partnered with National Grid Renewables on a 250 MW solar project in Wisconsin, expected to come online by 2027. That deal also includes a $20M community fund contribution.

Microsoft separately announced a $3.3B investment in new data center facilities in Wisconsin alone, all dedicated to supporting AI-driven workloads.

## An electricity demand problem with no easy fix

Microsoft’s AI data center electricity demand in North America is projected to surge over 600% by 2030. To put that in perspective, that increase alone would be equivalent to powering the entire New England region.

The broader data center industry is expected to reach approximately 48 GW of combined capacity by the end of 2025. Many of those projects are opting for behind-the-meter or off-grid generation, particularly using natural gas, to sidestep the lengthy delays caused by grid interconnection queues.
