- NASA identified two Genesis Mission priorities: applying AI to more than 150 petabytes of scientific data and accelerating the development of integrated space systems. [1] - The White House announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments but did not provide a line-item accounting or identify an allocation for NASA. [2] - DOE’s consortium includes all 17 national laboratories, five nuclear-security sites and 41 outside organizations. Google separately committed $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits. [3][4] - NASA did not announce named projects, participating NASA centers, data-access rules, benchmarks or delivery dates, leaving its contribution less defined than those of DOE, NSF and NIH. NASA said it will explore using artificial intelligence to analyze more than 150 petabytes of data from telescopes, satellites, orbiters, landers and aeronautics research as part of the federal Genesis Mission.[1]
The agency outlined two areas for work with the Department of Energy on July 22. The first would apply AI to decades of observations, simulations and models in search of discoveries across astronomy, astrophysics, space weather, Earth science and biology. The second would use AI and DOE computing resources to speed the development of systems spanning spacecraft, communications, logistics and surface operations.[1][2]
The announcement adds NASA’s archives and engineering expertise to an initiative that the White House said now covers more than 15 federal agencies and more than $5 billion in federal commitments. NASA did not disclose a dedicated budget, identify a program or name the NASA centers and missions that will participate.[1][2]
A shared platform built around DOE laboratories #
President Donald Trump created the Genesis Mission through Executive Order 14363 on November 24, 2025. The order gave the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy general leadership of the initiative and made the energy secretary responsible for implementing it within DOE and operating the American Science and Security Platform. DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil serves as the department’s Genesis Mission director.[3][7]
The platform is intended to connect national-laboratory supercomputers, secure cloud environments, AI models, scientific datasets and tools for autonomous or AI-assisted experiments. The order allows secure access to proprietary, federally curated, open and synthetic datasets, subject to classification, privacy, intellectual-property, export-control and cybersecurity rules.[7]
OSTP is responsible for interagency coordination through the National Science and Technology Council, supported by the federal chief data officer and chief AI officer councils. DOE must also establish rules for outside partners covering data and model sharing, intellectual-property ownership, commercialization, user vetting and access to federal research resources.[7]
DOE said its Genesis consortium includes all 17 national laboratories, five National Nuclear Security Administration plants and sites, and 41 companies, nonprofits and philanthropic organizations. The department reported more than $800 million in partner commitments, a category that combines compute and cloud credits, model access, expertise, research partnerships and direct funding.[3]
Google’s reported contribution is $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits. The company said DOE Genesis awardees would receive access to tools including AlphaEvolve, AlphaFold 3, AlphaGenome, WeatherNext and AlphaEarth Foundations. It also plans to provide Gemini for Government seats and tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users across the national laboratories.[4]
The $5 billion figure is not a single new appropriation #
The White House described the government total as more than $5 billion in federal commitments and did not publish a full agency-by-agency reconciliation. The total includes funding at different stages, including money already obligated, planned spending and new funding opportunities.[2][6]
DOE opened a $293 million Genesis request for applications in March. On July 22, the department selected 278 proposals for award negotiations, including projects led by national laboratories, universities, companies and nonprofits. Selection does not guarantee an award: DOE said funding remains subject to negotiations that the department can cancel or rescind.[8][9]
The National Science Foundation separately announced $380 million for 20 programmable cloud-laboratory teams, matched by up to $20 million from the Astera Institute. NSF also listed more than $80 million for scientific data infrastructure and up to $100 million for AI-ready datasets.[5]
The National Institutes of Health said more than $1.2 billion in obligated fiscal 2026 and planned fiscal 2027 funding aligns with its Bio Genesis priorities. NIH set a goal of cutting in half the time from scientific discovery to health impact within 10 years.[6]
NASA’s release contained no comparable funding figure. It also did not say whether its 150 petabytes of data will be copied into a central repository, accessed through federated systems or made available to approved private partners. The executive order provides for controlled access; it does not require NASA’s archives to be opened without restriction.[1][7]
NASA has not set project-level milestones #
The executive order established several mission-wide deadlines. DOE was required within 240 days to review federal capabilities for robotic and AI-augmented laboratories. Within 270 days—August 21, 2026—the department is directed to seek an initial operating demonstration of the platform for at least one national science and technology challenge.[7]
DOE must submit its first annual report by November 24, 2026. That report is supposed to cover the platform’s operating status, integration across participating laboratories and agencies, user engagement, measurable scientific advances, publications, prototypes and outcomes from public-private partnerships.[7]
The broader Genesis Mission has a stated goal of doubling the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within a decade. The government has not yet published a methodology or baseline for measuring that target.[3]
NASA has not translated the mission-wide goals into agency benchmarks. Its announcement did not identify a first dataset, model, engineering demonstration, validation process, project count or completion date. For now, NASA’s contribution is defined by the assets it could make available—more than 70 years of science and engineering work, a 150-petabyte archive and expertise across spaceflight systems—rather than a funded implementation plan.[1]
