Elon Musk is building a domestic chip factory in Texas that could break America's dependence on foreign semiconductor suppliers — and he's doing it with private money, not a government handout. The project, called Terafab, is a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX now rising at Giga Texas, and it's the single most consequential manufacturing bet any American company has made in decades.

Here's why it matters for every working American: the AI boom has made memory chips the new oil, and right now the United States doesn't control the supply. TSMC, Samsung, Micron's overseas operations — the critical supply lines run through Taiwan and South Korea. Washington's answer has been the CHIPS Act: billions in subsidies, years of delays, and the usual lobbying-class gravy train. Musk's answer is different. He's building the capacity himself.

On Tesla's quarterly earnings call, Musk publicly thanked Micron for providing a "significant allocation" of memory on "reasonable terms," according to Bloomberg, and noted that memory pricing has gotten "pretty insane" as AI demand surges. He also thanked TSMC and Samsung. Public companies almost never single out suppliers on earnings calls. When they do, it signals scarcity.

The gratitude, though, sits right next to the longer game. Tesla and SpaceX don't even rank among Micron's top 10 customers, Bloomberg data shows. They lack the checkbook of the hyperscalers who lock up supply for years. So Musk is building his way out of the dependency. Terafab starts with a roughly $3 billion research fab capable of producing a few thousand wafers a month. The full build-out, CNBC reported, could run between $55 billion and $119 billion, with Intel signed on to help design and fabricate.

Musk was blunt about the reason. Terafab is "not to get leverage over our chip suppliers," he said. "It is to ensure that we have enough chips down the road." The industry, he argued, isn't growing fast enough in logic or memory to meet his needs "unless we also make chips ourselves." The facility would bring logic, memory, lithography mask development, packaging, and testing under one roof — something Musk says doesn't exist anywhere on Earth.

Gizmodo framed the earnings call around merger speculation between Tesla and SpaceX, noting that Musk dodged the question while highlighting collaborations like Terafab and Starlink connectivity for Tesla's autonomous vehicles. Investment firm Deepwater raised its odds of a merger from 80% to 90%. That's the Wall Street parlor game. The real story is the industrial build-out.

Tesla is spending more than $25 billion this year, largely on AI, which pushed free cash flow negative for the quarter. Musk told analysts he asked his team to spend money "as fast as we can without it being too wasteful," and claimed this is "probably the fastest industrial scale up since World War II in America."

Maybe. Maybe not. The stock was down after the report. Earnings per share missed badly. The price tag for the full Terafab vision is staggering. But contrast this with what Washington has delivered: the CHIPS Act passed in 2022, and groundbreakings have been announced with great fanfare — actual production output remains somewhere over the horizon. Musk is putting real capital on the line, right now, on American soil.

The open question is whether a car company and a rocket company can actually become a chipmaker at scale. That's the $119 billion question — and the one that actually matters for whether America controls its own technological future or keeps waiting on foreign suppliers and Washington press releases.
