As Zuck would say, it passes his \"mother\" test.\n- Ultimately, Meta's edge in the AI battle is its vast edge in creating and cross-promoting consumer apps.\n\nWith Meta's Muse agent [shooting to the top of the App Store charts](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-muse-personal-ai-agent-top-app-store-charts-2026-9), I'm reminded of something Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this year.\n\n\"There's a lot of agents out there,\" Mark Zuckerberg told investors on an April earnings call. \"There aren't that many that I would want to give to my mother.\"\n\nThe Meta CEO said the company was willing to tinker until it had an AI agent \"more polished and dialed and easy\" than the competition. Something that \"just works.\" Something that would pass his [\"mother\" test](https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-ai-agents-mother-test-openclaw-2026-5).\n\nNearly a half a year later, that strategy is paying off, with Meta's Muse agent overtaking [ChatGPT](https://www.machinebrief.com/compare/chatgpt-vs-claude) as the top free AI app.\n\nThis is the playbook for how Meta wins at AI — not by having the best frontier models, but by having the most successful consumer app and pushing it out to its billions of existing users.\n\nPeople seem to like Muse! Like, *really* like it! [I've been playing around with it myself](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-muse-review-access-to-emails-credit-cards-health-data-2026-9), and am pleasantly delighted by some of the tasks I've asked it to do (to be fair, it's also failed a bunch of tasks I asked it to do).\n\nIt's debatable whether Muse is the most powerful or \"best\" agent. Instinct is a similar product that I know one of my colleagues was really enjoying, and it seems to have a growing fanbase. Others have noticed how similar Muse is to [OpenClaw](https://www.businessinsider.com/openclaw-creator-moment-ai-changed-everything-2026-4), which appeals to more technically proficient users and kicked off the personal AI agent craze.\n\nwe built muse from scratch, but it is definitely heavily inspired as a product by openclaw. After I used openclaw in january I bought hundreds of mac minis for the MSL team and lots of us fell in love with using openclaw (and other personal agents). [@steipete](https://x.com/steipete?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) is a genius and his…\n\n[September 21, 2026](https://x.com/natfriedman/status/2102103707936768130?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)\n\nBut neither Instinct nor OpenClaw has the sheer power of Meta's massive user base, where it can cross-promote its apps. Nor do they have Meta's knack for creating a normie-friendly, easy-to-use consumer app.\n\nThat last part is the key.\n\nSay what you want about Meta, but you have to concede they are very good at making apps so easy to use and popular that your mother (or even grandmother) can — and loves — to use. They make apps that are so easy and compelling to use that their biggest criticism is that their apps are addictive and people — kids, even! — spend too much time using them.\n\nMeta hasn't been winning the AI race in terms of [creating the most cutting-edge models](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-llama-was-big-deal-developers-see-untapped-potential-2025-5), so far. Up until now, they've failed at creating the most popular consumer-facing AI apps. They launched celebrity-voiced chatbots early on (a John Cena one now lives in infamy because it was found to [engage in lewd talk](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/meta-ai-chatbots-sex-a25311bf) with what it was told was an underage user), as well as the ability to create your own character chat on Instagram. Their AI [video app, Vibes](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-new-vibes-feed-ai-slop-2025-9), was a huge flop compared to [OpenAI](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/openai)'s [Sora](https://www.machinebrief.com/compare/sora-vs-runway) 2 at launch.\n\nBut finally, Muse is the thing that clicked. It's impressive enough it's won over the tech crowd, but easy enough to use that regular people are playing around with it. The biggest hurdle of an AI agent for normies is figuring out what kinds of things you can ask it to do — and nudging people in the right direction for how to start using a product is something Meta is great at.\n\nIt didn't need to be the most bleeding-[edge AI](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/edge-ai); it didn't even need to be the first AI agent app. It just needs to be the easiest to use that gets the job (mostly) done.\n\nAs one former Googler [summed it up](https://www.tiktok.com/@ashleystriblet/video/7688095325663382798?_r=1&_t=ZT-99wdZ7Py4nF): \"User experience matters. Design matters. Making products easy to use matters.\"\n\nHere's Meta's play right now: Let [Anthropic](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/anthropic) and OpenAI be the ones to worry about AI accidentally killing humanity and all the burdens, regulations, and misery that go along with that. There's little upside in rolling in the muck with the doomers or the accelerationists. Instead, Meta will capture the normies who just want something to help manage their inbox — and all the spoils that come with that.\n\nIt's not hard to imagine how Muse could become lucrative for Meta — a company that mainly runs an ad business — as a shopping app. [Amazon has already blocked it](https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-blocks-meta-muse-ai-agent-shopping-site-2026-9), but other services like PayPal and Shopify are partnering with Muse, happy to let Muse connect shoppers through their payments.\n\nMeta has the money and political capital to get massive data centers built. They have the ability to aggressively promote their internal apps, like Threads, to their billions of users.\n\nIt's the game plan Zuckerberg described to Wall Street back in April, while bemoaning how complicated the AI agent OpenClaw was to install and set up.\n\n\"I think if you had something like that, that worked quite a bit better than those systems and was easy enough that people could just get, then I think you go from having something that hundreds of thousands or millions of people are going to use to something that is going to be addressable to billions of people.\"\n\nAnd eventually, when you win billions of users, you win the war.\n\n[Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-muse-user-friendly-design-killer-feature-2026-9)\n\nGet AI news in your inbox\n\nDaily digest of what matters in AI.\n\n## Key Terms Explained\n\n[AI Agent](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/ai-agent)\n\nAn autonomous AI system that can perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions to achieve goals.\n\n[Anthropic](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/anthropic)\n\nAn AI safety company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, including Dario and Daniela Amodei.\n\n[Edge AI](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/edge-ai)\n\nRunning AI models directly on local devices (phones, laptops, IoT devices) instead of in the cloud.\n\n[OpenAI](https://www.machinebrief.com/glossary/openai)\n\nThe AI company behind ChatGPT, GPT-4, DALL-E, and Whisper.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/muse-s-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-can-win-at-ai", "canonical_source": "https://www.machinebrief.com/news/muses-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-ca-lp28", "published_at": "2026-09-23 09:00:01+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-09-23 10:00:49.942470+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["ai-agents", "ai-products", "artificial-intelligence", "generative-ai"], "entities": ["Meta", "Muse", "Mark Zuckerberg", "ChatGPT", "OpenClaw", "Instinct", "Nat Friedman", "App Store"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/muse-s-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-can-win-at-ai", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/muse-s-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-can-win-at-ai.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/muse-s-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-can-win-at-ai.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/muse-s-normie-friendly-design-is-the-playbook-for-how-meta-can-win-at-ai.jsonld"}}
