MSI Claw community VRR fix gets “largest update so far” with experimental refresh rate overclock up to 180Hz

ClawLab version 2.2.0, the largest MSI Claw VRR update so far, adds experimental refresh rate overclocks up to 180Hz and fixes stuttering issues for MSI Claw A1M, Claw 7 AI+, Claw 8 AI+, and Claw 8 EX AI+ handhelds. The update includes stable VRR profiles (30-120Hz and 48-120Hz), safeguards for experimental profiles, and requires users on older versions to restore the original VRR configuration before installing.

The community-made ClawLab tool has received a major new update, version 2.2.0, which brings several changes aimed at improving Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) behavior, including a fix for an issue that could cause noticeable stuttering and choppy visuals when the frame rate dropped.

The update supports the MSI Claw A1M, Claw 7 AI+, Claw 8 AI+, and Claw 8 EX AI+, although support remains limited to the exact internal display panels validated by the ClawLab developers. According to the patch notes, “ClawLab 2.20 is the largest MSI Claw VRR update so far”.

What does the update offer? #

For regular users, ClawLab recommends two stable VRR profiles. The first covers 30-120Hz, while the second uses 48-120Hz, matching the official range provided by Intel and MSI. Both profiles include a correction for Intel’s Low Framerate Compensation behavior, along with fixes that help ensure the VRR configuration remains active after startup and a helper that improves desktop cursor behavior.

The developers also addressed reports of 24-120Hz appearing on some Claw A1M and Claw 7 AI+ models. According to the patch notes, this is an Intel telemetry issue, and ClawLab does not install or provide any 24Hz profile.

Overclocking your display

For users who want to push their displays further, version 2.2.0 adds several experimental refresh-rate profiles. These include ranges going up to 144Hz, 165Hz, and even 180Hz. Anything above 120Hz is considered an overclock, as it falls outside MSI’s specifications. Results will depend on the individual display panel, so there is no guarantee that every unit will work at the higher refresh rates.

ClawLab has added several safeguards to these experimental profiles. Users are shown a warning and must confirm the risks before proceeding. The installer also provides a 15-second test, automatically returns the display to a safe 120Hz setting if something goes wrong, and rolls back the change if the test fails or times out.

The developers have also included specific instructions for existing users. Anyone running version 2.1.2 or an older managed version must first restore the original VRR configuration using the recovery tool, restart Windows, install version 2.2.0 in a new folder, apply the desired profile, restart again, and then run the status check. ClawLab will refuse to install over an older managed configuration that has not been restored.

Early feedback from users has been positive. One Claw EX owner said the update was working well across every game they tested, while another user said it fixed severe frame-rate stuttering that occurred when their games dropped to around 50-60 FPS.
