Mozilla and Mistral are collaborating on Firefox Smart Window using open-source AI models. Users in Europe and North America will receive a privacy-friendly, local, and multilingual AI assistant that operates based on their browser tabs.
Smart Window, currently in beta, utilizes Mistral models to simplify complex search queries, extract relevant information from browser tabs, and tailor responses to regional languages and cultures. The rollout begins in France, in French, alongside an English version for North America.
The partners emphasize that this initiative embodies four core principles. First, technology is distributed openly, as both parties have advocated for open source in the tech world for years. Additionally, AI is locally optimized, ensuring users are not dependent on a single company while receiving answers that align with their language and culture.
A third pillar is user control: AI conversations are not stored by default, and Mistral maintains a zero-retention policy for partners. Finally, the collaboration focuses on sovereign AI, providing consumers worldwide with access to transparent and open innovation. Mistral also collaborates with Cloudera, among others.
Technical operation and privacy guarantees #
Smart Window analyzes active browser tabs to distill relevant information, such as studies, articles, or product pages. Mistral’s AI models are locally optimized for four European languages: French, German, Dutch, and English. Users can configure which data is used and where it is stored, with additional protection against data leaks.
Mozilla and Mistral emphasize that their collaboration is a response to the dominance of closed, commercial AI systems.
