The animal, now wearing a tracking collar, will be released in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Redwood City police issued an alert around 11 a.m. for the neighborhood of the 1800 block of Madison Avenue; it asked that residents keep their pets indoors.
Using drones, police and officers of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife located the lion in a backyard. It was then immobilized with a tranquilizing dart. The animal is a young female, estimated to be 1 to 2 years old.
“This appears to be a no-harm, no-foul situation where a mountain lion has left nearby suitable habitat and wandered into a populated area,” said Krysten Kellum, a spokesperson for the wildlife agency.
The neighborhood is near Red Morton Park, on the west side of Redwood City. Mountain lions have been sighted in Stulsaft Park, in the hills about a mile to the west.
