The Beijing-based AI startup is tapping Alibaba's cloud infrastructure for a massive GPU cluster to power its latest trillion-parameter model, raising fresh questions about US export controls.
Beijing-based AI startup Moonshot AI has locked in a deal with Alibaba Group to access roughly 20,000 Nvidia H200 chips, giving the company the kind of computing firepower typically reserved for the largest labs on the planet. The arrangement underscores just how aggressively Chinese AI companies are scaling up, even as Washington tries to keep the most advanced semiconductors out of their hands.
The GPU cluster is being used to train and run Moonshot’s Kimi K3 model, which launched around July 17 with up to 2.8 trillion parameters. For context, that puts it in the same weight class as the frontier models coming out of OpenAI and Anthropic, the companies that have dominated the global AI conversation for the past two years.
The Alibaba connection runs deep #
This isn’t a casual cloud computing contract. Alibaba holds approximately 36% of Moonshot AI, making it far more than a vendor. It’s the company’s largest strategic backer and, through this chip-sharing arrangement, the critical infrastructure provider keeping Kimi’s models running.
That ownership stake also means Alibaba has significant skin in the game when it comes to Moonshot’s trajectory. The startup’s valuation has climbed to as much as $35 billion on the back of its recent model launches and surging user demand. Discussions around a potential IPO in Hong Kong are reportedly underway.
Why 20,000 H200s matter #
The H200 is Nvidia’s enhanced version of the H100, the chip that became the de facto currency of AI training over the past few years. A cluster of 20,000 of these processors represents a massive concentration of computing power, enough to train models that rival anything coming out of Silicon Valley.
And Moonshot isn’t stopping here. The company is reportedly already pursuing Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell chips for its anticipated K4 model.
Kimi K3 arrives with a bang #
The Kimi K3 model’s debut was apparently not a quiet affair. Demand surged immediately upon release, with the model positioned as a direct competitor to the leading Western AI systems. At 2.8 trillion parameters, K3 represents a significant step up in scale for Moonshot and for the Chinese AI ecosystem more broadly.
