MoonPay unveils Paybox, a universal AI shopping wallet for consumers MoonPay launched Paybox on July 23, a universal AI shopping wallet that lets consumers authorize AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT to execute purchases using plain-language commands. The tool, built on the open x402 protocol, supports transactions across Amazon, Brij, and Resy, and allows users to set spending limits and revocable permissions. MoonPay Chief Engineer Neeraj Prasad said Paybox closes the execution gap for non-technical consumers who could already ask AI agents to explore options but not complete purchases. MoonPay unveils Paybox, a universal AI shopping wallet for consumers The crypto payments company wants to be the bridge between your ChatGPT window and your credit card, letting AI agents actually buy things instead of just talking about them. MoonPay just launched what it calls the missing piece of the AI shopping puzzle. Paybox, announced on July 23, is a wallet tool that plugs directly into AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT, giving them the ability to do something they’ve never reliably done before: spend your money. How Paybox actually works Users connect Paybox to their preferred AI agent, fund it with a bank account or crypto assets, and then issue plain-language commands. “Book me a flight to Tokyo next Thursday” or “order that standing desk from Amazon” become executable instructions rather than polite suggestions from a chatbot. The tool handles a surprisingly wide range of transactions. Amazon purchases, flight bookings through Brij, restaurant reservations via Resy. It’s positioned less as a crypto-native product and more as a universal commerce layer that happens to accept crypto alongside traditional payment methods. Neeraj Prasad, Chief Engineer of MoonPay Labs, framed the problem clearly. Non-technical consumers could already ask their AI agents to explore options and compare prices. They just couldn’t pull the trigger. Paybox is meant to close that execution gap. Paybox is built on the x402 protocol, an open and decentralized standard that enables compatibility across different merchants and AI agents. Users get to set their own guardrails too. Spending limits, approval notifications, scoped permissions, and revocable access are all part of the package. Everything is protected by passkeys, which means no shared passwords floating around between you and your AI assistant. The competitive landscape is heating up MoonPay isn’t the only company eyeing the intersection of AI agents and payments. Robinhood and Coinbase have both made moves in this space. Robinhood and Coinbase have leaned toward closed-loop systems, where transactions stay within their own ecosystems. MoonPay is betting on the opposite approach. By building on an open, decentralized protocol, Paybox can theoretically work with any merchant and any AI agent that supports the standard. One particularly notable design choice: MoonPay has opted not to act as a custodian of user funds. The company doesn’t hold your money or control its movement. The launch follows MoonPay’s acquisition of Dawn Labs on May 11, 2026, which brought Prasad and his AI engineering team into the fold. Earlier in the year, MoonPay had already introduced tools in February 2026 allowing AI agents to manage wallets and execute transfers, essentially laying the groundwork for this more consumer-facing product.
